The future of 5172G
There's a lot to like about the 5172G. Love the strap. Don't mind manual wind considering it's a 12 hour watch so a 'wear when you want' approach is easy in terms of winding and setting the time. I'll be no one ever uses the chronograph feature but it adds interest to the dial. Initially I didn't like the round pushers but they are growing on me.
What do you think the future holds in terms of desirability? Do you think a discount by AD is possible? |

So many threads on TRF I simply don’t understand these days.
You don’t want a chrono and you really want a self-winder? On the plus side you like the strap. |

The watch over copies the 5320 accents and is yet another blue dial. Sort of a so so release to me. Its anybody's guest where it will be 10 years from now.

I think it’s a great watch. The case / lugs are more interesting than the 5170, it’s on the sportier side with a larger case size and blue strap. I’m not that keen on the hands, but it has vintage Patek DNA all over it.
How’s it going to do? Well it’s not a Nautilus or Aquanaut, so I don’t expect we’ll see massive waiting lists, but I think it will do better than most other Pateks. One of their nicest releases for quite a few years imo. |

Not a fan. They priced the 5170s too high and couldnt give them away. 5170J was 87K then the US had a price decrease and brought the G/R down to $81K which was still absurd. I think they realized the 5170 was a flop which explains the lower price point for this one at 73K. My guess is that it will be readily available.

I think it looks quite nice in pictures... second modern chrono by patek after the 5070 in terms of aesthetics alone is you ask me. The in-house chrono caliber has great action. But Not even 5070s are doing all that well nowadays so who knows.

I'm just trying to have a conversation. No point in ripping on me for thinking about a watch from different angles.

This is what I contributed to the thread that Ben Lee started. I was between 2 camps - whether to buy the 5170P or wait for the 5172G. I got the P. Quote:

I do like this watch because of the blue dial and calfskin strap. However, I prefer the 5170p over this model.
Hard to predict the price outlook for this watch, but it is always difficult to get a discount for a new release in blue variant. |

Unless it would be discontinued rather soon, I doubt there is a strong case to believe in its future desirability. 5070 as the last Lemania and 5170 as the first in-house Patek have better future potential imo.

There will be a premium when first come out..... Just like the 5524
After that it will tank....... Buy preowned..... All the 5170 still tank after it been discontinued......

I really don't think it'll do well. Bumping this from 39 to 41mm was a mistake, both in that 39mm is a better size for a formal watch like this and because the proportions are totally off now, in my opinion. The reception for this watch has also seemed to be worse than for the 5170, which itself did rather poorly, so I'd expect this to flop.

It’s an incongruent watch to me. Vintage/Art Deco lugs on a modern casual watch?

A disappointing release in my eyes. Size (too big), lack of creativity (very similar characteristics to the 5320g), and a watch with a confused identity (a concoction of sporty, faux vintage, and Art Deco). The lugs look like a grandmother’s scalloped soap dish she would have in her bathroom. YMMV.
If it’s a must have for you, I would not be an early adopter; see how it fairs before jumping into the deep end.

Have to see actual to be sure. Just from pics, not really a fan. I much prefer 5170P. More classically elegant. The larger 41mm case size will also not fit the movement so well.

Similar to 5170. Very few covet watches on leather anymore. That’s life

Looks like I'm in the minority here. I really like this piece a lot and it's pretty high on my wish list. I don't think I can resist...
I find the design of this reference sensational. For me it's the most beautiful simple chronograph since the 5070P. The only thing I have to criticize are the additional two millimeters in diameter compared to the 5170. But the 5370P also measures 41 mm and the diameter doesn't really bother me... Since I am not interested in a possible resale value anyway because I keep all my Pateks, I will probably add this reference to my collection. |

Really..... Only time would tell... I don't think it will tank the 1 year of releases....
Mr. Thierry Stern's adjust the pricing of the new piece..... 5172G Retail $73,710 VS 5170G or R Retail $81,100 As we know the preowned for the 5170G or R or G is around mid $40,000 If the new 5172G tank in the future expect for the preowned in the high or mid $30,000....?? I be all over it if that happen.......

The 5172G is different enough from the 5170 that it will have its own following.
In general, case size has been increasing across the board including the 5960 -> 5905 and the 5167 -> 5168 and even the new Calatrava at 40mm. The pushers are retro in appearance and people will love it or hate it. Blue dial white metal case is definitely popular now, so Patek went with this in releasing a new reference with what people want. The price decrease will help with sales as the original 5170G-001 was released at $87K USD, which was quite high. I would be interested in trying on the 5172G on the wrist before making a decision. The in-house manual wind chrono is a fabulous movement and it will be used in their watches for quite some time in the future. |

Believe it's actually a suede strap. The dial has a sandblasted matte look to it as well. Stock photos as usual, don't do it justice. I'm not saying it stunning but it is better looking that the release photos lead on.

It does remind me of the fabled 5070P so maybe that might spark some extra interest, but think it will be tough gig for this to stay at retail.
This MB comparison won't help, this type of thing has killed the AP Code. https://www.watchprosite.com/montbla...3521.10719796/ |
