Amusing quotes from the local jewelers
I tend to buy most of my watches online and bring them into local jewelers to have them sized. These shops all sell watches, nothing high end, so I don't really expect them to have in depth knowledge of Swiss products but the rolexes in particular always trigger some completely unsolicited commentary much of which I find pretty amusing. I usually politely smile and nod in response. I thought I would share a few that some fellow watch fanatics might find amusing as well.
Sub C no date 114060 Pointing to the bezel the jeweler says "yeah the problem with these is that they get scratched up all the time but you can just pop them off and put on a new one. Other than that you just open the back and squirt some oil in there every couple of years and they'll run forever." GMT II 116710 BLNR A conversation about the price of a new clasp for the omega he was sizing led him to comment, "they overcharge for the parts just because the name. For example that Rolex you have uses almost all the same exact parts as the accutrons I have in that case over there. They buy them from the same place but charge because they call it a Rolex. Datejust II 116300 3 associates: 1st:Handed the Rolex to the first. "Do you need a new battery" 2nd: 1st associate hands to the second. "How much did you pay" (told him the DavidSW price) "yeah but how much did you pay for it" 3rd: comes out of the back and looks down at watch "is that real" to which I reply yes and she walks away without saying anything further. Breitling Galactic 44 "Oh yeah nice watches they make these in Connecticut" |

Why would you have a random jeweler size a Rolex?

Sounds like they are light years away from becoming an independent RSC.

So you you trust these people to do anything with your watches. From the sounds of it I wouldn't take a g-shock to them for a battery change.

Wait a second... isn't Rhode Island only 20 miles from state line to state line?

I kinda feel the same, unless you also buy a lot of product from them (which you might), this just seems a little rude. Of course, I don't know the details.

I didn't originally see that you paid them for the service. My mistake.

OK, everybody lets calm down. The OP story is I assume meant to be humorous, its not but that's a different thread and well who really cares. We all know that some AD's are incompetent. Why in the name of ... however would most of the posters above wish to go into an in depth conversation as to whether or not it happened, whether things have ever been said or become budding inspector clueso's over why he would go to that store in the first place, where its located versus another AD, why he wouldn't just jump in his car or whether the whole story is real or fake - lighten up for goodness sake!

I get it. I went to a little shop that does watch batteries etc to have them take my explorer off the bracelet and put it on a leather band.
The guy started to twist with a pair of pliers and I was like whoa whoa whoa - he looked at me and asked "is this a real rolex"... i wanted to vomit. |

only one member assumed your fellow members here had an issue with the post and started ball breaking. i can assure you of this; we laugh together. don't take this stuff literally. we're all here for a good time and quite frankly, most would't care if it were or weren't made up. its funny and a great base for a good thread. stay a while longer - and as Aristotle once said; "Everyone in the pool, I'll watch the cooler!" |
