The 15202 in 2022 (AP RO 50th Anniversary)

With confirmation of Patek Phillipe Ref. 5711/1A-010’s discontinuation, it made me wonder what becomes of Audemars Piguet’s Ref. 15202’s in the near future, with 2022 being the 50th Anniversary of the Royal Oak.

What say you?

AP will follow PP me-too style and upgrade the 15202 like Patek did the 5711.

Jumping ahead it seems... Patek did not upgrade the 5711 at this point. All they did is discontinue the 1A while the 1R remains in production.

Back to topic... I don't think the 15202 will be discontinued but I would not be surprised about a ceramic special edition in 2022.

I think there will be a ceramic 15500 or even 15202 this year.

The 15202 in 2022 (AP RO 50th Anniversary)

There will be no drastic changes to 15202 since that is the homage to the original RO.

Do expect some special 15500 though.

I think comparing the 15202 to the 5711 is a bit off base. The 15202 is truly meant to be a faithful reproduction of the original 5402, while the 5711 is a modern update on the original 3700 - more like the AP 15500.

I am really hoping that what AP will do for the 50th anniversary is to release something even closer to the original than the current 15202 (but perhaps with the modern clasp). I'd love to see a dial with the same font as the original, a return to the monobloc case, and perhaps even to see them make the 50th anniversary version as thin as the original (although this would sacrifice the exhibition case back, it would be worth it IMO).

I expect a black ceramic 15202 or an iced blue 15202

I prey they discontinue the 15202 so they can fly in value, sitting on 2 for investment, best watch out there for the money.

Special edition 15202 in platinum with a dark grey dial originally limited to 150 pieces but then expanded to regular production due to demand and another LE of 250 pieces in yellow gold with dark green dial which is expanded to a regular production piece due to demand. Neither piece will be available to you or anyone you know but dozens will show up in unworn condition on Chrono24 at 3X MSRP.

in 2022 there will probably be like 10 anniversary models. they should do a 15202 with a salmon dial in platinum.

I think they will update the current 15202 with an updated dial and possibly updated movement. In addition, a few special additions of 15202, which will be impossible to get.

I’d eat a shoe if they replaced the 2121 movement.

But wouldn't that piss off all the buyers of the salmon dial in white gold which was released two years ago?

This is unfortunately so true and has made the 50th anniversary a non-event.

Who cares about what’s coming? We all know who gets them, or where they end up!

You know what I don't want?

Some limited numbered edition where half its production run ends up in the hands of greys and not in the hands of us collectors here.

The previous iteration of the 202 was not a great success but the 40th Anniversary model has been a rip-roarer so I don't think they should mess with a winning formula with a brand new model, a special 50th edition would be OK.

Problem is that most "collectors" aren't actually collectors. They prefer to realize the profit instead of respecting the relationship with the boutique.

The 15202 in 2022 (AP RO 50th Anniversary) thoughts...

Pretty excited about this...not necessarily able to purchase just yet, but wondering if now would be a good time or if prices will go down on the old Royal Oaks and I should just wait. I've been checking the AP's here https://www.bobswatches.com/audemars-piguet/

Do you guys think prices are going up or down?

Indeed. Very well said, indeed. It breaks my heart. (And my head?)

Why would prices go down? When have prices for luxury goods, like watches, decreased in recent memory? There is nothing historically to point to a reversal of prices. The trend is up. If you want it, buy it now or pay more later. That simple really.

We need another quartz crisis for prices to go down.

Unobtainable new models don't cause prices of discontinued models to go down. Lots of recent examples (BLNR, maxi case Sub, steel bezel Daytona, 26331OR, various ROOs etc etc). If prices go down/crash it will be due to other factors, i.e., a general market crash, which only an idiot would hope for, or just a slow death of the hype.
