Is the Patek 6119 too large and too flat?

Hello everyone,

I was very disappointed when Patek discontinued the 5196, I always thought that the watch was the perfect size for a proper dress watch. Now, I am finally ready for my first Patek and the watch has been discontinued. I am a little concerned that the Patek 6119 has increased to 39mm.

I am purchasing a 6119G but I have never seen it before outside of pictures and videos.

I have read some reviews that some owners find the 6119 too large and too flat and it seems to wear much larger than it really is.

I have a 6.5-inch wrist. Do you think I will find the 6119 too big? I am currently wearing a 40 mm Rolex Explorer 1 and I previously had a 42 inch Rolex Exp II and it seemed fine to me as my wrist is fairly flat.

I would appreciate any thoughts you have on the appearance on the wrist of the Patek 6119.

If you are wearing a 42 inch explorer ii with no issues. I think the 6119 should be just fine.

I wear the 5196 and I do find it the perfect size for my 7 and a quarter inch wrist, I have tried on the new one and I do find it a bit large for a thin dress watch.

I find the 6119 too large for a simple dress watch, not too flat. It is less the 39mm case that makes the watch look large but the large and rather empty dial. Also a mix of design elements I don't like including the hobnail which I would not want on an everyday watch. Not a fan of the bridge design of the new movement either.

Much prefer the 5196 look but found it quite large already at 37mm for a narrow bezel / large dial basic dress watch on my 6.6 inch wrist (tall guy). In addition, the mini movement gave me pause but I am ok with the closed case back. Also thought about 5296 as I don't mind automatic and date on an everyday watch.

In the end I got a little preowned 3998P which I have worn daily at times even when running around in swim shorts and T shirt.

I totally agree with this. For many people, on paper a 39mm watch should not be "too big." This proves that it's not just the number on the measuring apparatus that's important.

I can flip everything you said and that's exactly why I love the 6119

The case shape is flat such that it sits poorly on my 6.5 wrist. Like a dinner plate. Same goes for the 5196. I found that the 5146 case shape is much better for my wrist. The case shape and how it sits on your individual wrist is something to pay heightened attention to with the 6119, in my personal experience.

I have a 7.25” wrist. This is wearing a 36mm Explorer and the 6119R. I don’t find it too flat. I do think it wears bigger than a 39mm normally does, but I find it still wears well.

Normally I’d say a 6.5” wrist would be too small, but every wrist size is different (you mentioned yours is more flat), so if you’re wearing a 40mm Explorer I don’t think you’ll have an issue at all.

Do make sure you try it on. I will say that if you try on a brand new piece, it will wear funny because the leather isn’t broken in. When I first bought mine, I was pretty disappointed in how it wore because the watch would sit off my wrist because the leather forced it up. But after 2 weeks of wear, the strap contours to your wrist and it wears very nice. Best thing to do is try on a piece that has been worn if you can.

I went to try this on, initially I was very keen on the way it looks.

In reality I found it too big for a simple time only watch. A more traditional 37mm would have been better. From memory the lugs were quite long too and it didn’t contour. Seems like a design oversight and I do have a flat top wrist

I have a 7” wrist so it isn’t that, just visually it seems too big for such a simple dial.

Still baffled me people are complaining about 6119 being too large but at least it has a calibre matching it's size thus the sub dial placed in perfect harmony, while accepting 5196 having a 215 calibre made for the 30.5mm 3796 and having it's sub dial way up and close to the center than it should be. It's utterly unacceptable and the epitome of pateks greed, thinking they could get a free pass with no innovation and people will just suck it up (and guess what, people does)
They really should release a 6196 ASAP with the 30-255, try shrink it down to 38mm and that'll solve so many issues

I have a 6.75 inch wrist and was disappointed on how the 6119 wore on me- too big and not comfortable. I suspect bc of the lugs. So for your 6.5 inch wrist I would recommend passing.

I have a 6007G that is similar in shape to the 6119, but 1mm larger. It wears very long lug-to-lug. I have a 6.75" wrist and it would say it pushes the upper limit of what I can wear. It does wear flat which can make the lug-to-lug look longer.

When it comes to size, the diameter is often an irrelevant dimension as pertains to how watches wear on-wrist. The important figure is the lug-to-lug.

The 6119G and 5196 are almost identical in lug-to-lug dimension. At 6.5 inches, you'll have no issue whatsoever!

I may be a bit biased but I think the 5119/5116 are the optimum size. The predecessor is too small.

It is not just lug-to-lug that is relevant. The 6119 and 5196 may be almost identical in lug-to-lug and work from that perspective (i.e., the lugs don't extend beyond the wrist) but one will look like a dinner plate on most 6.5 inch wrists and the other one less so.

Tried both 5196 and 6119 and found both to wear too long for my 6.5 inch wrists due to the lugs sticking straight out.

Tried on the 6119. Definitely felt like it wore bigger than its actual size and I usually wear a 41 RO.

The main issue with both 5196 and 6119 is the lug to lug length, always felt that they were a bit too long. With the large case and dial of 6119 it feels a lot bigger than the dimensions suggest (39mm).

Wish Patek came with a more compact style dress watch - really like the 6119 design but too big sadly - damn my small wrist, I reckon will need 7 inch and above in order for the 6119 to fit nicely

Got a 6.5 wrist too, was disappointed the first 2 weeks of wearing it just like Rollieo mentionned. Felt it sitted too big on my wrist, but then the leather broke in and it wore fine from there.

What of today? I like it, it's class, discreet, elegant, I had people of taste complimenting on it (more than when I was wearing either 5712 or 5614; nobody complimented on those even if I knew that they were aware of what brand it was) and burglars don't seem interested in it. Win, win win?

I think it's more like a "look that you're going for", either you like this style of pure classic watch at the limit of having a "rock"vibe to it and how it sits knowing that it wears quite large for a "dress" piece at 39mm, either you find all kind of excuses saying it's too big. I was in the 2nd camp at first, but now I daily it to the office without even second thought and guess what, I'm really happy having it as a daily :)

I'll let you be the judge on a 6.5 wrist on the pics. I always wear my watches behind the wrist bone to have a snug fit and to prevent any damage to the bracelet and buckle. Sorry for the bad quality of the pictures, had to compress them as apparently there's a max of 293kb weight per picture ?

It's nice to have such project, the 6119G (or R) is a beautiful watch with a fantastic caliber.

This being said, it will be impossible to tell from our side (except bringing pics in the topic like the ones here above).

Watch size is a subjective matter. Whether it is 37 or 40 in absolute is irrelevant.

It has to do with:
- proportions vs your wrist size but not only, it depends also if you have a flat or a round one (39 flat isn't the same than a 39 rounder one);
- depends on what your eyes are used to seeing: if you're used to smaller/vintage watches or if you're used to wearing 40+ pieces. Furthermore, it is influenced by what the people in your country/company/family (around you in general) are wearing;
- A white dial looks bigger than a darker one;
- A cluttered dial looks smaller than a clean one (2-3 handers).

Hence, a big guy used to wearing small vintage will look good to him but too small for others. A small wrist used to wearing 40+ may find a 37 too small...

The lugs is a subject of comfort but has less impact on the overall aspect than the diameter itself.
