To polish or not to polish

My father gave me his original day/date (given to him by his father) and I’ve not worn it much as it had a brick bracelet which is a bit much for daily wear. I’ve recently changed to a leather strap which I much prefer. I’d asked my watch service guy about polishing ans the dial is a bit dull. He advised against it due to devaluation and also losing some of the gold. However, if I’m just going to wear it and never plan to sell it, are there any other considerations I should think about? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

There is almost never a devaluation when properly refinishing a watch case, with the possible exception of one of the few rare, original, examples.

However, here, the case has developed a nice, aged patina and character. The original contours and shapes are unlikely to be able to be brought back without it looking odd.

I would be happy with a good exterior cleaning and proper COA service.

Imagine the sights that watch has seen in its lifetime, don’t polish those away .. if you get what I mean .. a lot of sentiment wrapped up in that watch too I’d imagine, enjoy it !

That watch is perfect as is. I’m not against polishing in general but I wouldn’t polish that. The patina is exquisite.

Nice late 40s early 50s reed bezel 6611b (or 6611 or the like).

Original handset and datewheel too !!

Tbh it's very soft metal and already had a 'natural polish' or usual wear top left hand lug from shirt/coat cuffs etc.

I'd definitely not remove any more material of course.

That's a beautiful heirloom! If you're not planning to sell it, polishing it for personal enjoyment makes sense. Just keep in mind that polishing can reduce the metal and change the watch's original lines slightly. If you prefer its look polished and want to wear it often, go for it. Otherwise, maybe a light touch-up to keep some of its character? Either way, enjoy the watch and the memories it holds!

Top left lug is almost gone…..I would be thinking laser weld before I would polish anymore gold off that case

I don't understand the connection between polishing and the dial. You definitely can't polish the dial. And I don't think that polishing the case would enhance the appeal of the watch. It's an honest and worn watch, you can't change that.
