Explain the difference in a Yachtmaster and a Sub?

I don't live close to any stores that have a Yachtmaster so I don't recall having ever seen one in person.

Are they that different of a watch from a a sub? The pics look like it's a sub with a different bezel.

Just curious as I have never seen one in person, thanks in advance.

Case is completely different. Yachtmaster is “softer” on the case edges I would say. The Yachtmaster also has polished center links where the sub is brushed.

Bi directional bezel. Unlike the sub, which is unidirectional for safety reasons when diving.

The blue dial is appealing....the white gold with falcon eye is cool but not for the price.

For me the big draw for the Yacht-Master was the Platinum bezel insert. It is a different looking watch than the sub. Sometimes it doesn't take a huge difference to make a difference especially in the Rolex line up the little details can make a big difference. Things like different colored dials different colored font just all those little things having a second hand that's a different color the Yacht-Master is a different watch than the sub. It could be said that every watch is the same in that they all tell time.

I think the original YM's had the same case as the Sub but was thinner due to a different caseback. At some point the case was redesigned to be smoother and more rounded.

I have owned the SS/Plat Yachtmaster twice but never owned a Submariner in my almost 40 years of Rolex. The Sub is more of a toolwatch while the Yachtmaster is flashier but still has most of the utility.

Now my opinion as an owner....to me the Yacht-master is the "luxury submariner"...its like a Land Rover vs a Range Rover. When I bought mine they had every version of the Yacht-master available and a Sub and Sub-date to compare it to. I already have an 39mm Explorer and an Omega SMP, so the Sub already felt too similar. Seeing the Yacht-Master in person I was blown away...it exudes luxury, while at the same time being a well built Rolex tool (type) watch. It bridges a gap between something like a day-date/date-just and Submariner/GMT. I went with the TT with Chocolate dial for collection variety, but the SS with Grey/Silver dial would be an amazing choice too.

If you compare the base Submariner with the 40mm YM, then I’d say the Submariner is more rugged and for the CIA operative out in the field. The YM is more dainty and for the CIA analyst with a desk job. But I think you need to toss the two-tone Submariner into the mix as well, and that’s for the CIA director.

My first Rolex was my blue dial YM40. Fell in love with it straight away vs an AD’s showroom full of other models. They had a Sub date too which just looked dull in comparison.

My mate has the Slate dial version & a Pepsi. The BRLO collects dust vs the YM’s time on his wrist. The YM40 just feels right with its curved case, & the perfect weight. Looks gorgeous too, especially outside in the sun. Saying that, it’s equally at home as a dress watch, in a suit, or in a t-shirt.

I’ve thought about changing mine for a blue dial Sky Dweller, but can’t bring myself to do it. Not sure I ever will in reality.

Sub’s are two a penny. YM’s less common, classier, & just……well…..more special…..

Both a great choices OP.

I’ll add, the YM line seems to have changed a lot over the years for whatever reason. The DNA of the Submariner remains the same with more nuanced subtle changes.

This. In the beginning it was very close to a Sub, but with a Twinlock instead of Triplock crown, and as I recall only available in TT and PM. The platinum bezel SS model came along later. Always struck me as a bit of an odd duck.

The platinum/SS model built some popularity and then they added dial choices and subtle changes that made it much more distinct from the Sub, and it really came into it's own.

I have sub and YM in rotation, sub bulletproof everyday watch, yacht master elegant and special. YM has slim case like Daytona , very comfortable, but polished central links and case plus soft PT bezel not for everyday in my lifestyle.
Sub good for one watch collection. YM second watch for special occasions.

For normal people, they are the same watch, different colors. For people on this forum - they are so different as to not be in the same universe. Remember, Rolex originally designed the YM as the next generation of the Sub then decided at the last minute to scrap that idea and just launch it as a different watch.

If Rolex made pickups. They would both be F-150's and the Sub would be a Tremor and the YM would be a Platinum trim - but basically the same. And the SeaDweller Deep Sea would be a Raptor.

They are both great watches, The Yacht-Master has a bidirectional rotating bezel while the
Submariner bezel is unidirectional to help divers keep better track of their dive time.

My wife really likes the look of the 37mm Yachtmaster in Rhodium. But, I'm wondering if she can pull off the 40mm. She has a 39mm Pelagos and I'm thinking the thinner Yachmaster in 40mm might actually be more comfy to wear than the Pelagos.

Any women sporting the YM37 or 40?

Not really answering the question that's already been answered but I think the Rhodium YM 40 is one of the brands most underrated references. It's gorgeous and available with minimal wait for the most part.
