What causes this kind of pitting on case?

And is it ever able to be remedied? Seller is trying to sell 16610LV M serial with box and papers with price drops from 13500 all the way to 12000 USD over past few months. I am not buying, but I've never seen anything like this.

This makes me cringe when I see this, mostly on accessorized ladies or men who wear their watch very loose. To each their own I suppose.

Agree. Pitting on stainless is typically caused by manganese or chlorides. It's also got a distinct look, that doesn't match that picture.

Across my 20 years of various steel watches, I've always found my case ding or gouges are mostly along the chamfer/line angles of the lugs. The sides of the case seem to get mere light scratches in comparison.

I always wrecked non sapphire crystals though.

As mentioned they are bangs and scratches and definitely not pitting. And surely the wearer would have known they were making a real mess of the sides and to keep doing it is a little bonkers

Exactly that expect it was worn daily and not pampered like most of todays Rolex watches.

I had a watch that had almost those exact same markings. It was from dropping it on pavement/gravel in my driveway.

I have tons of dings on all sides of my EXP from heavy use but none like the ones shown. I wear the heck out of mine but I haven’t used it as a hammer.

That can be remedied by laser weld and polish but it won’t be cheap. I’m sure you can find a much better example.
