Finally got one...pics!!!

I've been floating around this forum for a while now and always wanted to join you folks in owning a Rolex, well now I have. Got it on ebay for a decent price (I think). What sold it was it was made the year I was born - 1977.

I took it to my local horologist and he opened the caseback to verify it's authenticity and we were amazed at how clean and in great condition the movement was in. He did say that the gold datewheel was unusual for this model (anyone got any thoughts on this?) but everything was genuine. The bracelet has quite a bit of stretch but I feel this only adds to the vintage look.

Please let me know what you think of my newest pride and joy.

Congrats! That's a classy watch! I love the old dial fonts. I wouldn't be bothered by the bracelet stretch either, just take out a link if it's too loose.

Good purchase of your birth year watch. I would be harder pressed to find a 1958 Rollie for mine. Enjoy!

That looks real nice. It should be a 1603 model with the engine turned bezel. Maybe you might like to check this out, it will be stamped between the lugs.

Life span

Spoke to a guy in Watches of Switzerland in Glasgow the other day and enquired about servicing my DJ in this thread. I told him the watch was 32 years old and he said it wouldn't last another 32???? Is he right? I thought Rolexes lasted for 100 years if you took care of them?

I challenged him and he said and I quote "Well it's not like it's an Omega is it?"

Any thoughts?

I don't believe he is right at all and if you took it to Rolex they would have a completely different story to tell. The oldest that I have is from 1963 and does not miss a beat - it has years to go yet. I am sure many here have much older watches still going well.

With his sort of attitude you may be better going somewhere else IMO.

Total drivel.....that would about sum it up...I have one which is 23 years old (check my avatar) and I consider it almost brand new.....not sure of your age but I am 46 this year and I would be very surprised if mine didn't outlive me and I have no plans to shuffle off any time soon....take care of it and it will last more than one lifetime for sure.....a beautiful watch.....really....

Some models with champagne coloured dials have matching datewheels.

I think that a brushed steel datewheel with black numbers would/should be fitted to your watch. Somewhere along the line the datewheel has been changed to your watch.

On my 1601 and 1600 (which are almost identical models to your watch) they have the steel datewheel with black numbers.

Bracelet

Finally managed to get a jubilee bracelet, looks great having a nice shiny non stretched band for a change. Just need to get a white datewheel to get it looking just right, Steve will no doubt sort me out there.

Will post pics when she is complete.

The lume looks good for '77. I have a 71-72 Air-King and the Lume doesn't look half as good as yours.
