Top or Bottom

Looking to (eventually) add to my collection;

- GMT
- Chrono
- White dial
- Jubilee bracelet

There’s two theoretical options which I have come up with that fall around a similar budget and tick all above boxes.

Top option;

Bottom option;

Top option is fair to say the most coveted of the options. Having two watches also keeps things concise which is a plus in my books.

I’ve made a huge assumption I’d be able to pick the top up at AD, and it goes without saying the bottom option will be easier to acquire at MRSP. I also feel the top options both being ceramic offer less versatility than the bottom three with a fluted, steel and alu bezels. Speedy could also be chucked ok a leather or a nato for even more versatility.

The bottom options would also probably get more use for what they’re intended to be. Not sure if that makes sense, but as an example I’d happily take the polar on a trip camping in the alps, whereas I’d be less inclined to take the Pepsi for the same...

With all things considered, I’d probably go bottom, but interested to hear others thoughts and if there’s any other timepieces which could cover the above criteria.

Less is more sometimes. The Daytona and BLRO are all you need - very versatile, functional and very coveted in our circle.

I'd also take the GMT and Daytona.

Depends if the emphasis is on style or use. If you are going to use a chrono in anger you should ensure that the Daytona's sub dials are big enough to read easily, in various light conditions. And be 100% happy with not having a date function. If it's just for the look, then the Daytona walks it. Nothing looks as cool. Throw in a BLRO and wow! What a collection!

For me (which is to say for my eyesight, not your eyesight) the sub dials on the Daytona are not easy to read all the time, which defeats the point. I also like a date window. The idea of having a Polar and a DJ appeals very much. Each are the epitome of Rolex's two branches of style language. And the Polar really is gorgeous when the fat lumes get going against the white dial. There's nothing else like it. But, again purely personally, I wouldn't have a Speedie. I've tried Omega and they just don't do it for me.

You can't lose either way.

Speaking for myself I dont buy any so called most coveted options, I only buy the watches I want to own and wear.

I can't argue with this. I prefer getting a collection that suits all occasions.

Cheers - I hear what you’re saying about the sub dials...in photos the speedie definitely looks more legible.

The polar is gorgeous I have to admit, would love to add this to my collection and would possibly be next on the list but feel I should opt for something other than another piece on an oyster bracelet.

Omega is a funny one for me - I enjoy my Seamaster, and speedy I think is a good piece, but nothing else in their catalogue appeals...

The flaw in this is the fact that you will get option number 1 from your AD at msrp. I highly doubt that will occur anytime in a reasonable time horizon. You can find the watches in option 1 in the Grey Market but at significant mark ups. Between the two options, 1 has the most appeal to me. Checks a lot of boxes and you can pick up a cool Seiko as a beater for rougher activities. Option 2 is the most realistic and the Polar Explorer II is a great watch and could be a one and only. The Speedmaster is a classic and a strap monster. The DJ is a nice watch but somewhat uninspired to me. Good luck and go buy what you can acquire and will wear.

They’re coveted for a reason - both great pieces, and in any event, that wouldn’t be a reason for buying them - as stated in the first post, there was a set of criteria I’m looking to fulfil because they are elements of watches which I want to own and wear.

Top is the knee jerk winner

But in actuality the bottom models (different versions) would last longer for me.

In Feb 2018, I walked into my AD on spec, got £400 off and walked out with it. Easy. Anecdotally, good ones are now changing hands for around £8K. It's ridiculous. I admit to being biased in favour of the current 42mm iteration, but if Rolex put ceramic on it and yank the retro vibe off it, I anticipate that the 40mm and 42mm Polars and Blacks are going to be highly collectable, notwithstanding their mass produced quantities. Of course, as well as being biased, I'm ignorant. No one knows anything for sure.

All the best with it.

All of them are good. Get the one that you can get at msrp first.

I would take the EXP2 first, and then take some time to think what it is you're really missing.

One step at a time, my friend.

On the other hand, can't see why the pink Daytona would not be used as much as the Omega, for what is intended to be.

I went hiking with my "Sub Date No Date" and guess what? It survived!

Don't over analyse it too much, buy what you like the most.

I would personally go for option C, top row + that beautiful DJ

Good luck!

Honestly, the bottom combo is something that I would be super happy with

Just seems a lot more usable to me than the top

I would like a Daytona at retail, because in an emergency I could sell it for $18k o overnight or so

However, I like to use my watches daily

Would I daily a Daytona? Probably not, not for fear of scratching it, but for fear of being mugged

I don’t live in the ghetto or anything, but that watch is world famous

Someone could kill you for it and buy a car or two with it

Now a Datejust, Speedy and Explorer 2?

I would wear any of those daily no second thoughts

I will also admit that I turn 30 years of age, in November

I am highly inclined to buy myself either a hesalite speedy or a Explorer 2 for my birthday

So I’m a little biased

Further!

You don’t need the Datejust

Explorer 2 and speedy would cover the same thing as gmt and Daytona
