Any value in fashion watches?

I like dressing up for most occasions and I buy from a variety of high end stores in the US (Brooks Brothers, Saks, Neiman Marcus, etc). Whenever I browse my favorite designers, I usually see that all the fashion houses offer their own watches. Is there any point to collecting these? Am I out to take a bath on these?

To be clear, I'm not referring to houses like Cartier or Tiffany. I'm thinking more of Gucci, Versace, Ferragamo, etc. Clearly these marks are not in the watch business but still have nice watches that claim to be Swiss movements.

I can never see myself owning a Royal Oak - I think they're too "boxy" and stuck in the 70s. But Versace offers a take on the Royal Oak that I would consider wearing and it's priced right around $1500, claims Swiss movement. Do these pieces hold any resemblance of value?

If you like a piece you should buy one to wear and enjoy. I don't think you can expect to sell one of these pieces very easily, and you'd pretty much get pennies on the dollar.

Most value in a watch is from supply and demand. Fashion watches have very little demand and their supply is endless unfortunately.

Chanel had one with an AP movement, that was kinda neat.

The answer here is a hard NO, if you define value monetarily. If, however, value included the joy you get out of wearing it, then that is completely subjective. If you buy the watch you referenced, I highly doubt you would ever be able to sell it for any reasonable amount.

You buy jewelry and fashion accessories for your own enjoyment, you almost never expect to recover what they cost.

If you get your value in the enjoyment of wearing your stuff, it was worth it.

Yes they've made quite a few cool pieces with reputable watch makers.

Ha ha. As an early fan of RM watches (I still own one) I must say, "I resemble that." It does seem like a fashion item (similar to Jacob), but RM has always combined latest technology with exquisite craftsmanship. Even though everything looks plastic on and in the watch, I think the movement is as smooth as Lange.

You have probably heard this a hundred times, but it was the most comforable watch I have ever worn. The case did not feel hard (it was slightly concave) and it was very light weight (titanium). My watch dropped in price for many years which was routine for almost every watch then except the Patek 5070 and a few LEs. When I sent it in for repairs, the watchmaker said it was worth a bunch of money--as much as I had paid for it. I did not believe him. Now there is one in Chrono24 for over 2.5 times what I paid. Next year, it might be down 50%. I am going to stop looking at ads.

Very well summarized.
For a dressing-up guy, the watch is probably not important at all, but just showing that they are trendy and wear fashion house watches fitting their shoes. I would wait until Rolex produces shoes, at that moment their today's watches are very very old vintages

They are called “fashion” watches for that reason in that they are similar to buying a Gucci shirt or Prada shoes.
You buy them to wear and enjoy, not as an “investment” and should not look to recover anything when you decide to move on.

As part of 'costume' or 'stage' jewellery yes, for collectors of fine mechanical timepieces... not so much.

In the secondary market you'd be fortunate to ge $150 for the Versace. It would be almost impossible to sell anywhere but therealreal or ebay.

There's some value in that it's the cheapest way to impress a layperson with a brand name on the watch (without buying a fake).

To me fashion watches are just another subset definition of watches. Most watches have a hard time squarely fitting into a category anyway. To me its “watch drift” as generally trying to be something to everyone.
So fashion watches are a genuine category with much to be appreciated. With an open mind many options exist.
Finally, I don’t think any of the watches I’ve listed would sell at any discount to my “purchased new from AD retail price paid”.

I think this is a fashion watch!
Alexander Shorokhoff

Is this a fashion watch?
I think so

How about this NASA/Anicorn collaboration?

Or maybe something for you and the grandkids!

No one can convince me this is not a fashion watch!

And another great Fashion watch!!

Fun watches, great with matching 'costume' for various events.

Any value in fashion watches?

Some Ralph Lauren watches had JLC movements so that could be worth something at least. But as a rule no, pure garbage. Honestly I think it cheapens the brand that does them.

Real Talk: Hermes is absolutely making interesting watches. And they own a stake in Vaucher.
