Hi,

New to this forum. Wanted to see if anyone could help with approximate date of this Non-Oyster Rolex precision steel watch. Picture is from Heritage auctions. The watch I have has the same exact ref. # 9118 inside of case back. There is a serial# inscribed on case back. Would this watch be pre mid-1940s since there is no serial number or reference number between lugs? I heard that is when Rolex began inscribing serial # between lugs. Thanks in advance for any help.

If you give us the serial number we could give an approximation of the date based on that...

The one pictured has had the dial redone and sports a 10 dollar twist-o-flex, and so it's hard to say if the movement, hands etc. are original to the watch either..

The other thing to consider is that this since is not an Oyster case, I am not sure whether the SN and case reference # are engraved the same way as on Oyster cases.

Thanks for the info. Did some more research on this and it looks like non-Oyster cases had ref. # inside case back and serial # on back of case back whether it was pre or post mid 1940s. The serial # on back of case is 258824. Would that date my watch around 1955? I know that Rolex started from 100,000 after the 999,999 serial mark was reached in 1953.

1st 1940 watch i think had 6 figs where you would find that is unknown to me. id check the what movement it has.

Why don't you post up a photo of your own watch so we can make a better judgement...

Using a "similar" photo from the Internet is really just spinning your wheels.......

If you do not have any stamping inside the caseback such as II55, dating it to the second quarter of 1955, then your serial is likely from the 40's..

A good photo of your movement may help as well..

Got the watch back from being serviced today. The individual who serviced it used to work for Beverly Hills Rolex Service Center. The 1210 Rolex movement was cleaned, crown and plastic crystal were replaced(non-Rolex), and case was polished. Dial was untouched. Very pleased with work done.

Very nice looking watch -- but you really should find a wider strap, so that uneven pressure is not applied to the lugs via the spring bars...

Thanks for the suggestion Adam. While it was being serviced
I asked them to give me a measurement between the lugs so
I could get a leather strap for it and they told me 15mm. Looks
like I need to get 16 or 17 mm instead.

I did some research and my Rolex was produced in 1943....

Serial numbers reset in 1955, yours would be around 1958 I think.
