How much is too much?
Reading Quinson418 thread about getting a new Rolex catalog gave me an idea for this poll.
As most know, Rolex has price increases on their products annually. For a standard SS DateJust currently you can pay $5,000. Assuming Rolex continues to increase the price for this model, at what price point would you stop buying SS DateJust model(s)? For sake of the poll, use the SS DateJust only. I would not buy one now, due to price. $5,000 $6,000 $7,000 $8,000 $9,000 $10,000 or higher |

I would like to eventually own a DJ sometime in the future, but I like the Sub line much better so I'm trying to own the whole fleet of Subs before any other model. However, if the price of a SS DJ goes over 7k, I'm not sure I would spend that much on that specific model

Its more of a relative thing.
20 years ago, a TT DJ was about 2k, now its like what 8k? I'd suppose as long as its cheaper than a new economy car, its reasonable. If I am forking over 100k for a watch, it better be hand built and made with precious metals. (fingers crossed for my credor pre-order)

I chose $6000.
Kind of hard to guage as when one model goes up, the rest will go up also. |

I didn't vote for any of the price breaks because a SS DateJust doesn't appeal to me. They're not representative of my lifestyle. My interest in Rolex watches is mainly in the sports models. The only non sports watch I plan on buying is another early TT OysterQuartz because I'me in love with the integrated bracelet.

I think when are starting to get over $5000 for a watch you are getting too high. $5000 is about an average for a month's pay for most Americans in upper middle class college educated jobs, or for senior enlisted military or military officers.

In Canadian funds, $5,000 gets you into a new entry level Rolex. For example, a SS Sub lists for $6,200 and a TT Sub is $9,720. Even considering exchange rates, I have to think twice about indulging in luxuries like a new watch, especially considering that I need a new roof and gutters. Buying a new Rolex in Canada is an expensive proposition.

Considering scrap metal value every price is too high, emotional value however is immesurable in money terms, so as long as one feels happy with the item the right price is what one wants to spend.

Nice poll, especially since it was a result of my other thread, haha.
I think it is really hard to judge what is too much. When you really like that type of watch a lot, you will try your best to get it, at least that is how I am. But then, it comes to a place where some of us won't be able to afford one, then that is a whole different story. Anyways, I am not too fond of DJs, I am a fan of sport/tool watches, haha. |
