Icon20 Swap new BLNR for used AP RO?

Hi everyone!

I need some advice since I am tempted to swap my Rolex GMT MASTER II, 116710BLNR for a AP RO 15400ST.OO.1220ST.02. I purchased the BLNR 2019 from an AD at list price and have never used it, the watch still have some plastic on. The AP is pre-owned and in excellent condition, never polished and never serviced from 2016 and comes with box and papers. My current humble watch collection consists of the BLNR and a SUB 114060 which is my daily watch. If I trade in the BLNR I would get $13,961 for it and would have to chip in another $7,221 for the AP. What would you guys do? I have a hard time making up my mind on this one and would be very grateful for some advice.

Have a nice day,
Carl

My only question in mind is why would the AP owner accept only 14K $ for his 21k $ watch? If you know the owner of the AP and trust the watch is 100% real at this price I would say go for it!

PS: or did I get it wrong and you have to add 7K $ anyway to buy that AP? I firstly thought that it would be a straight exchange.

I would do the swap for sure. Just make sure the AP15400 looks right on you and fits well. And maybe try and get him down to 7K.

It is an AD who is selling the pre-owned AP, they are selling it for $21,183 so if I trade in my BLNR for $13,961 I have to chip in another $7,221 in order to ammount to the $21,183, what do you all think?

Factor in the cost of an AP service as well, within the next couple of years surely?

Whats the service interval on a RO?

Personally not a fan for any of the RO range, yes they have good movements but just do not like there style, and IMHO a very overrated watch.

Every 5-10 years, about 1000 usd. Main thing is if you swim with it get it water tested yearly.

I own a BLNR and I am in the market for an AP 15500. I do not think it is bad deal, but I would try to get a new RO for the unworn batman and the extra 7k.

I have a BLNR and an AP 15500ST. Both great pieces, and I don't see myself getting rid of either.

Seeing that you don't wear the BLNR and have a SUB, go for the AP.
$21K for the 15400 isn't bad if it's in excellent condition. Those that are available on line are listed around $25K.

is there a reason you're not considering brand new 15500?

Not really. I had my mind set on the blue boutique edition as everyone else , but after contacting every AP boutique in Europe (I live in Sweden) and got rejected from nearly everyone I figured that maybe the 15400 was easier to get.

but here you're swapping BLNR for a silver dial? not blue? 15500 black/grey is easy to secure at AD/boutique

This is a perfect example of why you should never trade with a dealer. The dealer is making money on both sides of the trade, which I don't fault them for, but you also lose on both sides, which I would never do.

Don't be blinded by the fact that you paid retail for the batman. The deal does not make financial sense. Plus in general you shouldn't sell your watches, as why did you buy it in the first place if you never wear it? I'll never understand that.

You are lucky that you bought something that you can get out of, but I would sell it on your own if you really must, not to a dealer. As you will see it in the dealers shop window the very next day for 16.5k.

Exactly, the blue 15500 seems nearly impossible to get, at least after my attempts. This deal is for a silver dial 15400. It is maybe completely crazy

An asking price is different from a selling price. I am looking to move a watch now - and if I sell on C24, you have to factor in your fees (4-7% I've heard) which can add up. If you are a private seller to, its no small feet finding a buyer that trusts you, you trust them and dealing with large sums of money. Time is money. As for why people sell watches - theres probably many reasons. But when you are craving a different watch and you know theres value in something sitting dormant on your shelve and not being enjoyed as its meant to be, move on and get what you want.

OP - If you are happy with the intake and the output, I'd say go for it.

If you have to add $7K, I would get a 15500. It’s newer and etc.

I did the opposite about 3 years ago, sold my black 15400 and picked up a BLNR (5% discount from my AD, the good old days) putting the extra cash in my pocket

I found the RO a bit dressy for everyday wear, also the bezel scratched by just looking at it, BLNR is a keeper!

It really depends on what else is in your collection.
I have a GMT 116710LN and a 15400 black and the GMT gets way more wrist time. I still baby the 15400 and would not have the AP as an only daily wear watch.
I prefer the 15400 over the 15500. And the white silver one you want is discontinued in that color. Although AP will do a dial change to black or ruthenium but not to blue.
The deal seems fair. If you paid around $10k for the BLNR and add $7k for the AP, you’re out $17k for a watch that goes for well over $20k.
Just be sure you like the way the AP wears, as it wears bigger lug to lug.

I would 100% if the 15400 is blue. You would still have the Sub as your daily and IMO this is a step up from BLNR.

Hmm maybe have to wait for a blue 15300, 15400 or 15500 to show up, this is a hard one! btw my wife thinks Im stupid and that the BLNR will increase even more in value

She's right. 1st generation BLNRs will keep increasing in value while 15400s not so much.
