Hey guys, I have been admiring your Panerai pieces for a while, especially the 312. The strap combos are just incredible. I purchased the Rolex Submariner Date (V series) less than a year ago, and I am considering a trade + cash for the 312. Owning both is not an option at this point. In your opinions, would it be a bad move? As we all know the Sub goes well with just about everything, how about the 312?

Not a bad move at all. The 312 is an amazing piece with a ton of wrist presence.

Tough one. I own both and love them both. If it came down to just one, I'd go for the SUB. I think there's more versatility with it......VERY tough decision..

having both the sub and a new 312 I'd say go for the Panerai. Every time you put on a different strap it gives you a new look. I love the history of a classic sub date, but the Pam 312 has the better craftsmanship IMHO from the pancake dial to the stainless case and the clear back case, 28 jewel movement, the iconic bezel guard I just love mine.

My advice is to be patient. Hanging out all the time on watch forums can make you feel like you need to keep up with the Joneses.

Do you like your 16610? If so, keep and and start saving away. It takes time to build a watch collection, but if you are flipping all the time, it could take even longer.

Very good point, thanks. I do like my Sub ... but everyone has one and everyone recognizes it ... probably because it is one of the best looking watches out there. Even though the 312 may have more wrist presence, I do not think people notice the "brand" as much. Then again, maybe I'm wrong about that assumption.

You're right about everyone and their mother knows what a Rolex Submariner looks like. That's why so many watch companies have copied the design (Ex: Invicta) so many years. I think that's one of the reasons I like the Panerai brand now.
It's better for me that I know what I'm wearing and not others around work, school or family life where Rolex is recognizable for almost anyone.

The 16610 is a iconic watch and I'm sure if you flip it, you would eventually want one again.

I would try to save for the 312. I am in the same boat as you. I have my Sub, but really want a Pam. So for right now I just drool at all the straps and Pams I see.

If you care about people recognizing what brand of watch you have, you should probably keep the Sub as it's probably the most iconic sport watches of all time. The PAM will probably only get noticed by WIS's like us. Please get the watch because you like it, not what everyone else thinks.

I personally would take the 312 over the sub every day. Panerai has so much more to offer than Rolex IMHO, you are not stuck with the bracelet only and can make one watch look different every day of the week if you like. I have owned so many subs over the years, multiple no dates, sub dates and a LV, and I never got the enjoyment out of them like I do with Pams.

I am finding that the last watch I want on my wrist is a Rolex these days, it's strange after so many years of wearing Rolex only. I would rather have one Panerai and a few leather straps and the OEM rubber than multiple Rolex sport watches.

Hard to say. The 312 is IMO more fun, with the straps, and PAMs are lookers. The 16610 is a more versatile watch, and really can be worn in more situations than the PAM 312 can. The 312 case is thick, and thus it can't easily pull dress duty. If it's your only watch, I'd stick with the Sub.

The Sub's SS bracelet does give it some versatility. You may also consider getting an entry level Luminor such as the zero or 005 which is about half the price of a 312. That way you can hv both with a little penny pinching here and there. : )

I have the 16610 and two PAMs (111 & 024). I have been thinking of selling the Sub to fund a 312 or DeepSea. I have resisted so far as the Sub is very well balanced and offer versatility...

i was deciding between a sub and a pam. i eventually decided in my lifetime if i were to have multiple watches, i would definitely have one rolex - the sub. therefore, i got the sub and love the watch. even tho so many people have it, know of it, or even sometimes think it may be a fake...i still enjoy the memories and history with the watch. now i am saving up for a pam 233. hopefully will be able to afford one soon.

my recommendation - save up for the pam, keep the rolex. it is iconic, even if you leave it in the safe!

I would not let go the sub for the 312.. you will be missing the versatility alot. I just sold my PAM 104, dont get me wrong Pams look great and fun to have, but I just have hard time keeping it on my wrist for more than 1 hour..
