Offered different watch from AD than I wanted. should I?

I had originally asked AD for James Cameron Deepsea And black SUb Date . I went back and told them to take the JC off the list since I decided it was a little too big for me.

Anyways, fast forward a year. Just got a call to offer the JC and not the sub.

Should I take it? I still like the watch but not as much as the subdate . I am not as enamored with it like I originally was..I also don't want to buy a watch that may be purchased for less than or close to retail in the secondary market after waiting a year. Is this watch going to hold value or appreciate? Is it something that a secondary retailer would take in value towards a watch I do prefer? Need to act quick so appreciate the input.

I wouldn’t buy it unless you wanted it. Sounds like you already told them you’re not interested in it.

I told them a year ago I preferred the sub and didn't want to take up two spots on the list for two different wathed which would lower my chance of getting the sub.
But, I was offered this instead a year later..
I love the blue-black face but thought it might feel heavy as an everyday wearer.
My wife tells me she think I will get used to it.
Frankly, I am afraid if I say no to it I will be pushed further back on the list for the sub.
I don't mind buying it to keep in line for the sub and will likely wear it and enjoy it. But, wonder if this holds its value or appreciates like a sub does. The impression I get is it doesn't but I am not sure.

I don't mind buying it to hold as an investment either if it holds its value or appreciates. I may start wearing it also and get used to the weight. But, I am mostly thinking about the appreciation investment part now.

Don’t buy it. That watch is a brick and most people get tired of it

My advice would be don’t try to play the AD game of you don’t know what you are doing.

Just buy what you want to and pass on what you don’t.

Personally, I like the JCDS but wouldn’t buy it as a sub replacement. It’s more of an enhancement piece in a collection than a do it all watch.

Since you prefer the Sub Date over the JC and aren't as excited about it anymore, it might be best to wait for the watch you really want. The JC might hold value, but the Sub Date is generally more sought after. If you buy the JC now, you could trade it later, but that depends on dealer interest. Make sure you're comfortable with your decision—choosing a watch should bring you joy!

You mentioned you decided it was too big for you. Did you try one on to come to that conclusion?

I had a sub years ago, upgraded to the JC Deep Blue and havent looked back. Been wearing it daily for 8 years and light as a 'feather' once you get use to it. Also, love the domed crystal.

Ridiculous idea to try to trick yourself into getting a watch you don’t want. Just say no.

I wouldn’t buy a reference just because it’s offered to me. Hold out for what you really want

Op, like the others have said, buy it if you like it and are going to wear it. That’s allot of $$$ to keep in a box? The JC is a beautiful big piece not for everyone. I know it’s hard to say , NO
Especially after waiting all this time. Pass, you may regret buying now, with a piece you are the fence about.

The market is changing and you may get the call sooner than you think.

Cheers,

You can always wear the James Cameron deep sea sea dweller on a rubber strap. I always thought, if I purchased one of the deep sea dwellers, I would buy a rubber strap and replace the steel bracelet with that. It makes it look smaller and it definitely reduces the overall weight.

But as other people have said, only buy it if you want it, and you will wear it.

Buying a watch as an appreciating asset is often a fool’s errand. There are many other ways, much better and with less risk, to make a return on your money.

You’re not going to Make any money on it period.
But I think if you get it you will love it and you will not need or want the sub. I’d MUCH rather have the deepsea.
It’s such a masculine Rolex and it wears great

Pretty sure the JC has never appreciated. I’d pass on this offer.

Buy what you like firstly. Many on this forum have regretted the SD due to the size.

Not at all.

When the one you really want comes, you'll like any other watch less. If you're willing to take a little hit on selling the JC when the Sub comes, you might as well just buy the Sub now in the secondary market.

I bought and sold all the variations (11..., 12..., and 13...) thinking the improvements would make it more wearable. I kept my 47mm panerai longer (rubber strap helped).

Don't recall ever being able to sell for what I paid (even during the hype years)

From what you said, it's a definite pass. Don't buy just because it's offered.
I'd take the JC Deepsea over the Sub every time though. Great to have choices.
