How many watches do you need in your collection

Hello, 1st time post

but have been thinking lately and also arguing with some other WIS

But how many watches do we actually need to own and enjoy?

I figure 5 should cover it

Sports, travel time, dress, PC and 1 just because you can

Thoughts?

According to my wife 1 watch is enough.
According to me I'm at 15 and still looking to buy.

5 sounds good to me, sports, dress, PC, chrono, tool / daily beater. At this point I own just 3, sports, dress, and tool and am not unhappy either.

You really just need like 3-4, needles to say I have 5.
You see the week has 7 days , so you can’t really enjoy them all when you have 5 or more. But in the other hand you want variety to don’t get bored or you might be simply addicted to keep collecting. The trick is to find your own number, find a balance without affecting your finances.

5 is ideal for each work day. The one that makes your day get to be worn over the weekend.

Need two, got to allow for servicing!

I’m currently thinking of reducing down to six.

Three for work (Patek, AP, and VC) and three for play (all Rolex).

I actually think the number is 10. Hear me out.

You get 1) Dress watch, 2) Chrono, 3) GMT, 4) Diver or whatever combo of 5 you think makes the great collection.

You then double it so you don't get bored. Why would you only live with 1 choice when you travel or 1 choice when you dress up?

So 10 :)

I'm currently at 2 Pateks (plus 1 more on the way), 2 Seikos, 1 Timex (for running/working out).

If I had the resources I'd own several more, even though I do not consider myself a collector at all. I just like them, so I buy them, simple as that. Although the older I get, the more basic time-only models attract me.

3-5. When I get past five it is a point of diminishing returns (cost vs enjoyment).

As many as you would like really.

I have 4 Rolex (Sub/SD/DJ/Precision), 1 Omega (Vintage Sea Master), 1 Bremont (Long service award), 1 Seiko (Pilot), 2 Marathons, 1 Luminox.

To be honest i currently only wear my Sub. Would like to add a 5 digit GMT then thats my Rolex selection sorted.

Unfortunately this forum has me now looking at Aquanaut, Gondola, Tudor and Seiko. Don't really need them, but they are very very nice.

Edit: Forgot PP Eclipse, blue face white gold, thats as my dress watch i think

Sounds very much like myself. Also at 2 Pateks at this point, both time-only plus date, and 1 IWC as a tool watch that gets exposed to pretty much anything that comes to my mind.

Waiting for 2 more Pateks but by the time they come through if at all I may not be interested much anymore as I am quite happy as things stand.

Just like the mystical harems of old. There is a permanent collection of several ultimate beauties that are are no brainers and desired by all - these constantly conspire to take the first place in my heart. The remaining are at my whim and yes they can be changed. Have a random Eunuch (Sistem51) in there just like you need to smell some coffee between perfume samples.

Most of us are monogamous to our families and our employers. Isn't your watch collection a place where you can play a little?

Also a reason why 5 isn't enough.

Say you have a piece from Patek, a piece from Rolex, a piece from AP and then maybe an Omega.

These brands each have several iconic models. If you stay at 5...damn that's pretty slim pickings.

Grand Seiko my friend. Those dials have me drooling everytime.

Agree on the Aquanaut as a first PP - great way to get started.

The mathematical formula is:

N+1 where N is the number currently held.

I recently arrived at the realization that I own too many and will be selling two or three. There’s wisdom in the saying “Buy only what you’ll wear.” I’m guilty of having three nice pieces that never make the rotation and I have no plans to open a museum, so some must go. Ideally I’d like to eventually be at five or less.
