Is this Rolex rare by any means?

I was wondering could this be called rare?
A day date 18039 there is only about a handful of these in this configurations for sale , so did Rolex produce a lot of this model? Or are collectors buying these watches and hoarding them?
In total there is about 30 18039s in Chrono and not much else.

Is this Rolex rare by any means?

I would say more “under-appreciated” than rare. I believe WG was probably a poor choice for Rolex when the 18039 came around. (and maybe still is)

It was introduced in the 1970s when Yellow Gold was that classically Rolex sign of achievement which a Day-Date signified.

White Gold, on the other hand, resembled that utilitarian functionality associated with Stainless Steel to the un-WISful eye.

Maybe 20% of DD sales were WG then and even now. So not unusual to see few on the secondary market compared to their YG/RG/Pt kin.

Afraid the word rare should not be used with the word Rolex, and just because anything Rolex related is perceived as rare, dont always mean its more valuable or collectable.

Trying to fit a particular dial choice or configuration into the "rare" category, or imply that collectors are hoarding certain dials, is a stretch.

You could have had your Day Date in any of a hundred different dials, and you can still change them if you can find them.

These are not the things that make a watch "rare" to a collector. Of course, trying to find something unique with ones Rolex is almost considered a sport.

Its less common.
DD are traditionally yellow gold. So, any DD not made out of yg is less common.
Rare I would not say.

WG DD are a true wis models. I love them!

WG DD is the most underrated Rolex PM model...I mean you could nearly have a 6 digit WG DD at the same price as a Batman more or less...
