Is this an age thing?

As I get older I'm starting to appreciate 3 things that I didn't seem to appreciate before:

1. 36mm models seem to fit and look better
2. Vintage or neo vintage models seem to look better
3. Gold and even TT look pretty and maybe even better than SS

I don't know whether it's a phase thing or age thing or something else but I noticed I look more at older watches on eBay and YouTube and many are 36mm (or even 34mm) and the TT or YG ones seem to look best.

Weird but maybe it's an age thing?

So far I can attest to numbers 2 and 3, as you can see in my signature. But, I’ve liked TT for decades, so not an age thing for me, per se. But I still like TT.

For me vintage in most cases just look way better and getting older has nothing to do with it

I don’t know, but I am 35 and have been in the hobby for 10 years at this point. I NEVER thought I would yearn for a 36mm daydate the way I have recently. Golly!

Don’t know if it is an age thing. I also started with steel but like PM more the last couple of years. Now I’m starting to look at more complicated watches, need to safe up a bit more. Like the Platinum Cubitus from Patek a lot! And i’m 42.

Well I’m no spring chicken, but mostly NOT feeling the same as you so more likely just a matter of personal taste.

1) Wrist size is a factor here - I wouldn’t consider anything below 40mm for my 8 inch wrist - preferably something bigger.
2) I much prefer newer models to older ones by quite a margin
3) In this neck of the woods certainly for guys, full YG looks 40-50 years out of date & just aesthetically brash, even tasteless. With you on TT though - the metal combinations add visual interest.

Definitely, I used to like the coloured bezels, now lean towards the iconic simpler references. Same goes for disliking Jubilees, now like them, even more so with TT YG. Used to hate the look of the AP ROs, now like them. Tastes move over time, ensures you have something you want for a lifetime :D

Some people have the ability to wear watches of different sizes and make them work. While I appreciate vintage watches, just like some cars, I have done it all and it does not work for me. You have to have the personality and disposition to deal with items that may no longer work as designed or have been improved upon and many times they can be difficult to service. The watch size thing is cyclical and the army of commenters who are always beating the drum for smaller watches are as tiresome as the large watch crowd was in the early to mid 2000's. Same mind set just smaller and thinner watches now. Ok, if that works for you. I have gone form SS to TT to PM and owned almost all of them along the way in some form or fashion. I have returned to SS or Titanium as my preferred metal for the simplicity and appearance. One of my points being is we each need to do what we enjoy and while others may not do or like what we do, no problem in that either.

I’m 60. I suppose that is old for some of you and young for others.

Either way, I’m not a fan of 36mm watches for the same reason I’m not a fan of 42mm watches. I think 40mm with a lug length of about 48mm is the sweet spot for me.

I generally don’t like two tone watches except when it comes to the 126613LB, which is one of my favorite all-time watches.

To me, watches got too big and too colorful. Everything trends and smaller watches with traditional dials may grow more popular.

3. Gold always was better than SS and TT in my opinion. TT never since when TT Date Just went out of style, only when the Rootbeer was introduced because of the brown bezel and SS RG combo is so beautiful.

Good post. I became interested in Rolex about 33 years ago. While the SS sub has always been popular, the 36 DJ and DDs were where is at. So I think for some of us, thats what we grew up with and thats what we like. However, I feel like for the average size person a 36mm with a long sleeve shirt looks perfect and a 40mm for a summer watch is perfect. I guess I am old school but a wall clock on the wrist with a dress shirt does not work for me at all.
As for the gold vs SS, I am biased. I love the heft of PM and its hard for me to go back...

It's part of the fascination and fun of the hobby/illness. I know what I like but I don't know what I'm going to like.

Speaking of vintage, particularly neo vintage I am torn on this. Case proportions on the sports watch I MUCH prefer the older style. When it comes to other upgrades like the solid link bracelets and much more substantial clasps, the new are far superior IMHO.

On the subject of two tone, my tastes have definitely changed. I used to love two tones watches, now I really cant see myself buying one. HOWEVER, the YM TT in rose gold with that chocolate dial is WOW!!!!!
