Icon5 Looking for my first Rolex

Hi everyone,

Fist thing I have to say is that the forum is great !! From reading through you guys' posting, I got addicted to Rolex and am going to look for one .

I've never own any rolex before and I am thinking about hunting for one this X'mas . What I have in mind is the SS GMTII-C. Since I'm a total newbie, I have the following questions:

1, The serial number of rolex often begins with a different letter (ie, V, M, Z, etc.). From my understanding, these serial number indicates when the watch was manufactured. Am I correct?

2, With the difference letter for the serial number, is there any difference in quality from one or the other?

3, Should I be looking for a V over M since it's more recent?

4, I am living in Vancouver, Canada. I visited one of the AD in the area and the sale told me the price of SS GMTII-C is approx. $8xxx. I know that there should be some discount, but can anyone tell me what a resonable discount range should be for this watch?

Thanks!!!

Welcome. There's no difference between one prefix number over the other. Some like the newest they can find, but in reality there's jusy no difference.

Discounts vary. Perhaps the best pricing appears on our own sales forum. Some great guys there.

Go to the dealer and try it on first!!!!!!!
Try some on first.
They look and feel differently on.
One will let you know which choice is correct.

I agree with Mike. Some of the best deals are in the Classifieds section. Deal with the established sellers (ask around to see who they are), and you won't be sorry.

Welcome to TRF!

Happy hunting.

Sorry to hear about your health problem Josh... But thanks for the offering. Since I just started my hunt, I think I'll shop around locally first.

Well the letter indicates approximately when the case was stamped out. Which is different to that date the movement was made and different again to when they put it on a bracelet. M? V? Doesn't matter.

you should be looking for a 10-20 percent discount as it's your first purchase. I know some people who have gotten as much as 30% off, but they are more volume customers.

Just to give you an idea on pricing, I paid $6250 out the door for my BNIB SS GMT IIc. Most of the ppl here I am sure could get a better deal. It took me 3 months to shop around and patience is the key to getting the right price you are happy with.

Thanks for the warm welcome and all the info from everyone. I'll keep them in mind while I go around the ADs in town.

Hey Tim, I don't know if I have that much patient :P. 3 months seems like a long time to wait for.
