Police seeking suspect who stole $39K Rolex

TROY, Mich.

Authorities are still searching for a man who stole a $39,000 diamond-encrusted watch from a suburban Detroit jewelry store.

Troy police say the suspect walked into Tourneau Watches at the Somerset South mall shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday and asked to see an 18 karat gold Rolex Presidential wristwatch.

Police reports said immediately after a store employee placed the watch on the suspect's left wrist, the man sprinted to the parking lot, jumped into a 2000 Ford Taurus driven by another man, and fled.

And the AD was an idiot!

If the store was mine, no one would try on a watch unless they were locked inside a room first. and the watch was handed to him through a small door. Same procedure for exiting the room as well. Watch goes in the safe and the buyer is let out of the room.

I'm sure that would be a very popular store. Customers love being locked into rooms.

Merchants around here are too tight to hire extra security for the Holidays. I'm thinking that they wish they would have hired the off duty officer for $25.00 an hour.

Well at least jewelry stores have insurance for this kind of thing, I assume.

I've noticed some ADs I've been to have armed guards, some have unarmed guards and others have no visible guards at all, I'm not sure why they have different approaches.

I have been to that store at Somertset Mall. The first thing i saw was 5-6 big guys in suits watching the door. Where was those guys? They also have like 5-6 sales people they as well, they stock alot of watches. Ron

As John Prine says "it's a big old goofy world.."

A few months ago I was in an AD in NC and asked to see the GMT2c from the show case. The saleslady ask for my drivers license before getting out the watch. I laid my id on the soft pad and then removed my yg Day-Date and placed it next to the license so I could try on the GMT. The poor lady picked up my watch got a very embarrassed look on her face and actually apologized for asking for my id. I just laughed and told her "no problem, I understand".

I agree, merchants need to hire professionals at this time of year for added protection.

With the way Rolex is and parts and checking SNs, I would think the watch will resurface sometime in the future.

here is the real question.

If it is returned to Tourneau. Will they sell it as new or used?

People should understand that is why some AD's ask for an ID before they whip out a watch. I would imagine a diamond encrusted Rolex would stick out like a sore thumb in Flint, MI.

I can't really speak to the troy police, but Somerset is more like one of the most exclusive malls in Michigan. But I'm pretty sure anyone from anywhere is allowed in, so it's really not that exclusive.
