GMT vs Sub
I'm in the process of purchasing another Rolex. I love the GMT 116710 but my only complaint is the center polished part of the band tends to get scratched easily. I love the Sub but it seems that's the most worn workhorse out there. Now I'm a larger guy and is the Sub a larger watch face vs. the GMT? Sorry to be lazy here as I could look these up but I wanted your thoughts on the versatility as well as which one would hold value IYO. Thanks much, Mark

Haute luxury watches are haute luxury watches, so holding value is rooted in the emotion of consumers. Emotionally, the sub takes watch lovers back to old heroes like Connery's Bond and Steve McQueen in Lemans. Yet, 116710LN has more functionality. That said, I think the 116710 BLNR drives down the value of the 116710LN because its features distinguish it from the branding of the sub, which is priced conspicuously close to the gmt that has more functionality. So clearly the sub's value is driven mostly by branding and not value relative to the 116710LN, which is a gmt with the added paraflex feature. The best value for the money is the 116710, but for now, it looks like a blue/black bezel is enough make the BLNR hold value better than the sub and the 116710LN. The best value IMHO is the 214270, but for some reason, I am emotionally drawn to the sub--go figure.

to me the 116710LN makes the most sense. looks like the sub, but different from the 1000 you will run across. is waterproof enough. has the gmt and the bezel is uni. can be had for far less than the batman albeit the same watch (best value as stated above). i think it wears larger than the sub. proportionately value should stay on par. i do hear you on the bracelet! don't be lazy however, compare/try on both - could be an expensive mistake not to. IMHO the 116710LN is one of the 3 best looking and one of the three best value watches Rolex offers.

Im also in the market for a GMT. Your comment makes me curious as 116710LN vs the batman. Looking thru online prices, they seem to be quite similar. Are you sure 116710 is far less cheaper? Some actual comparison would be nice.

Subs are common in the wild. I see them on a lot of wrists in my line of work. Its an accepted part of professional attire, like a tie.
So to be a rebel my 116710LN and BLNR are my preferred weekday watches. It helps that GMT is useful every day for me. Most folks btw will never notice the difference between the sub and the GMTII black bezel anyway. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

for an example, just went to jomashop and there the BLNR retails for $9,895 Usd where the LN is $8,450. after 5% and 9% discounts respectively, a $1,700 difference. then just did a quick forum check and found bnib blues run approx $8,500 and quickly found a bnib 2015 LN for $7K.

Had the same problem last April. Tried them on and the GMT II actually stands out for me. The 114060 wears a little larger because of the thinner bezel and cleaner dial compared to the GMT II. I ended up getting the 116710LN Sent from my SM-N920K using Tapatalk |

I prefer the Sub because it can go down deep in the water.
Ask Mick what that means...

Sub all day. It's classic. It's a workhorse. If you don't need the multi time zone function then the Sub is king in my book. Granted I am extremely biased I have loved the Submariner since I could read a watch.

I understand your dilemma. I agonized over the decision for months, until I went into the store and tried on both watches. A clear winner emerged and that was the GMT Master II. The kicker was it's functionality, given that I travel internationally.

"... is the Sub a larger watch face vs. the GMT?"
Not quite so. Notice GMTc has got thicker hands than SUBc.

I also understand the movement in the GMT is more complex than the Sub. Is that correct?

I travel weekly to different timezones but still choosen Sub C as my primary watch. I had the same dilemma but back the time i got sub blnr gmt was not available.
Ealier this year had a chance to buy blnr at market price but after second look i passed. While I like design my worry was that after honeymoon period I will back to Sub anyway. It is just classic watch which fits all occasions. Sent from my SM-G313F using Tapatalk |

I am in the same boat here. Looking at my first Rolex, have the funds in place (have been an Omega guy forever but it's time to make the switch!) and spent close to 2 hrs at the AD the other day. Tried on the Sub and GMT AND the Sub gold / steel. The wife said the gold/steel combo looks good but for me it stands out a bit too much and have a feeling if I go there I might regret it, and the higher $$$ is something to consider as well. Still on the fence about which one to go for. Am back to the AD this weekend and hopefully will decide.

Hi,
first point is the need of 2/3 time zone functionnality, which closes the match. Second point, spirit of both watches is not exactly the same, like their esthetic. GMT's bezel and band are little more glossy than sub's, which is more an "outside" watch. Sub offers also choice between date or nodate, GMT don't . For me i prefer the no date Sub C than the 116710. For my own i have a 114060 and a 16710, which is a good couple i think. The 16710 offers the choice between 3 insert (or more !). Good luck and choice! |

Both are great watches. I think the GMT IIC wears or comfortable than the Sub even though the sub has a glide lock clasp.

I've had subC and currently got GMT11c Blnr
I loved the glidelock of the sub but overall I prefer the gmt. I think it's a bit different , splash of colour and the Pcl shine nicely. Depends on what you want but I'd marginally pick the GMT2. If you compare subC to BLNR then the decision for GMT is even easier :) |

I went through the same dilemma and ended up buying a 114060 and a few days later came across a great deal on a Pepsi 16710 which is being delivered today!
Between the moderns ones however, I would pick the 114060 every time. |

Submariner. So what if many other people wear the same watch? You're going to let the actions of others dictate your own enjoyment?

I went for the BLNR but that's because I love the blue!
Re: PCL - there are countless threads on this topic. But in my personal opinion the watch looks better after it's been scratched a bit! Or you can brush them... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
