I'm in the same boat and going with the submariner. I feel it has more of a timeless forever stigma to it...better chances you will Always keep your first rolex ;)

I think you can't go wrong with either. My preference is for the Sub, but it is your preference that matters.

The Sub is a classic. I got a Sub as my first Rolex in 1991. It still gets 95% of my wrist time in spite of the fact that I now have 3 others.

Unless you have a specific need for the GMT I would tell you Submariner. The Glide lock clasp on the Submariner is worth the price of admission and the polished bracelet on the GMT is a scratch magnet.

Either one is amazing. Pick what you like more.
Black is more versatile and classic, in my view. |

I had exact same dilemma and trust me it was a huge decision and was in AD for two hours after loads of research etc
I was all set to buy a gmt and tried both on For me the sub just felt better amd wasn't as bling as gmt which I prefer when it's on I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either but what I will say is I think from everyone I spoke to AD and grey market guys they would far rather buy in a sub I know one guy in Glasgow said they would pay more than list for the sub as has a big waiting list for ND or date they are both as sought after I went for ND as preferred the look personally but the gmt is lovely I just preferred the sub on and the quick clasp is amazing Both great watches sub is a classic and will always be worth what you pay if not more !!! |

I purchased my first ROLEX in March of this year. I decided with the Batman. I love it more with each day that passes. Would highly recommend. |

I have never understood the allure of the Submariner, although it seems to be the leader of the pack. My contention is that maybe 1 in 1000 actually dives, and 999 of 1000 travels. The GMT function while traveling is a great complication. When I go to Australia, it's a 15 hr time difference, and a nuisance to figure out the time at home. I usually ask my iphone for the correct time at home.....but with the GMT, you can easily track 2, or even 3 time zones....how often are you going to have to monitor your underwater time??? Probably never....get either the Batman, or the Explorer II...that's my vote!!!

Rolexes aren't cheap so don't rush your decision. I like the sub for their brushed bracelet and glidelock. I went for the GMT first though because I don't dive and I travel a lot so the GMT was more ideal. The green sub is definitely an amazing piece. I wear find myself staring at it when I'm bored

You indicated you wanted the Sub and for your first I'd go black...that's what I did.
That said, if you have the opportunity to try both on I would do that prior to buying. |

The black sub..... demonstrates a timeless design that has proven true over the years. A classic.
However the GMT is a functional watch. Own both and while I like the sub... The GMT is what stays on the wrist longer. As this is a first....take your time before you make the choice. |

Can't go wrong with either. Get the Batman and save for the Sub. Believe me, you will need the other one after you get the first one...

I would say the Sub. More versatile and looks really sleek. But then again if you are worried about people judging you by the watch your wearing I would go with the GMT as I feel like its less popular and doesnt attract too much attention.

Hi
I was in the very same dilemma not so long ago. It was either the Rolex Submariner Date or the GMT Master II. I could not choose between the two, I don't travel much and I definitely do not dive. Both awesome watches and look very similar. In the end I went for the Submariner Date simply because the authorised dealer near me who had the Submariner Date in stock was able to offer 2 Year 0% finance and the other dealer with the GMT Master II wasn't able to offer any finance.
