LV prices...

So I noticed something while perusing Chrono24 the other day and I'd like to solicit opinions and analysis.

The prices for the plain old LV sub 16610LV have skyrocketed and I have a theory as to why.

Less than a year ago, the ones with regular pointy 4s on the bezel insert were going for low $6K range and the flat 4 inserts were going for 8-9K.

Now, I'm seeing nearly all of the pointy 4s in the $9K+ range.

I'm wondering if this is ignorance on the part of the sellers, seeing the flat four iterations and rationalizing that their pointy four is in the same condition (and oblivious to the difference) causing them to match the asking price accordingly for what they're attempting to sell. If that's the case, I'd imagine not many of these sell at that price.

It could also be calculated (they know the difference), but this too would probably result in slow or nonexistent sales.

Any thoughts or data points? Is this new price level real?? Has anyone here bought or sold at these prices?

If all sellers raised their prices on a particular model, buyers who want to buy that particular model would be forced to pay the asking price. There's no "right" price for what these guys are trying to sell, or for anything on sale for that matter. It's a free market and a free world.

Supply & demand. Simple as that.
Anything is only worth what anyone else is willing to pay for it.

All vintage SS Sports Rolex have started to steadily increase recently.

Pepsi & Coke GMT's especially.

People want them and are prepared to pay the inflated asking prices.

Personally I would love a 50th Anniversary Sub but I am not prepared to potentially pay more for a 10 year old watch than I can get a brand new one for regardless of whether it's 'minty' or not.

Obviously some people will and that's fine, it's their money but unfortunately it's steadily bumping up the prices for everyone else too.

So no one can say they've sold one or bought one at these prices?

Has anyone tracked items on Chrono24 or other forums/online to see if these are hanging around a long time at these prices?

Speculation has limited utility so I was hoping for better crowd sourced experience/data sharing.

So I was looking for a NOS 50th Anniversary Sub a few months back, and noticed the price jump of upwards of $12-13k on the forums here, and others.

I ended up buying a new Hulk, because I couldn't justify a $3k price difference in a 10 year old watch.

Supply and demand is a beautiful thing, we'll see how long it lasts! I'd still love to get my hands on one

Me too. Regret not buying one when they were first released.

Yes this is clearly the new price point on LV's. Like many retired watches, the prices have steadily climbed. Also with vintage pieces selling at levels they are, many more collectors are focusing on 5 Digit Rolex. Also given price points of many modern Rolex, it makes older retired watches more attractive as well. So the market bears what it bears and all comes down to supply and demand. I also know most collectors are parting with less of them and holding on. Yes you see enough for sale but rarely pristine, mint and complete sets.

I passed on several 16610lvs in the 2000s. I could've paid less than $5k too..... oh well I could say the same things about stocks and real estate. If I would've purchased it prob would've bombed....

Bought a low F series about 7 years ago for less than 5 with the intention of keeping it. So glad I did. She comes out of the safe on occasion to play.

I purchased an M series back in 2007-2008. It's a complete set and it's worn(not a safe queen) as part of my weekly rotation.
Currently, I'm trying to source a glidelock bracelet for it, as the glidelock is an amazing feature.

I picked up a F series in excellent condition full set for low mid $7k a month ago. From a local dealer who is a friend. They were asking $8k and most others were in that range. I don't think they are hitting that selling price much. I got it to round out the collection and figure it will be a keeper for some time so most likely value would be there. Can't imagine it goes up up beyond inflation much and did not think of it as an investment. It's in the weekly rotation. It does feel nice and crisp on the wrist.

Like others have said supply and demand. In a year folks may loose interest.

the longer you wait, the more you pay. it's as simple as that for classics that are discontinued.

I picked up a NOS V serial LV about 4 years ago that I stumbled upon in Osaka at a grey dealer. I whipped my card out. The salesman laughed and said "You know your Rolex." Said they got it in the night before.

I couldn't stand having it just sit there so I bought a used full set M a few weeks later that I wear the heck out of.

Prices are only going to go up. I mean they are spiking already and some are holding on to theirs. If you want one then get one now. Great reference and will appreciate.

I wish that I had never sold my first one a Z.
