Is the datejust 36mm to small ?

Hi all.

I'm seeking 2 watches but 1 is a datejust.

My wrist size is 6.5cm across ,
Is the 36mm too small moving forward ?
I love the look of 90's datejusts.
Is this a good idea / investment or with larger sizes being the modern thing is a 36mm a bad idea. I feel the 41mm is beautiful but looks too much and feels a little big.
I like the feel and look of the 36mm but worry I'm not investing right ?
Thoughts ?

I had a 36mm DJ smooth, blue face on an oyster bracelet on my 7.25 wrist and felt it was a tad small imho.

I now have a SD43 and love the size and heft of it with no complaints!!

To each their own?!

36mm is the classic size. FWIW, I own a DD36 without any regrets.

It’s all about personal taste. I’ve had a few but always felt they were too small and underwhelming. The best way is to go and try them on.

It’s normally either;

Is the DJ36 too small?

Or

Is the DJ41 too big?

You will get as many people confirming both, as everyone has different tastes.

I have a 6.75” wrist.

I had a DJ2. Sold it.
I had a DJ41. Sold it.
I now own a DJ36 and it is just right.

36 is the iconic, classic, size.
41 is a modern iteration, but it’s size is on par, if not bigger than some of the sports models, which i personally find weird.

My favourite analogy would be a two-seater sports car being made larger than a 4x4. It’s just a little odd.

It’s a three hand model that’s design is meant to be a little smaller. Not only that but to me, when you hold up a 36 next to a 41, the way the watch, case, and general layout, looks far better on the DJ36.

I have sports models up to 41mm. My Sub C looks perfect on my wrist, however I felt the DJ41 didn’t.

For this style of watch, it’s all about the 36mm and as such will stand the test of time in the future as well.

Despite my advice to go with 36mm, I equally don’t think that larger watches are a fad or a sudden fashion statement. I think sizes have just evolved in to larger pieces in the last decade.

But, I personally think that many people now buy larger watches to show off or make a statement. That’s the horrendous Kardashian-esque world we live in now where everyone wants recognition from an Instagram post.

Aside from any of my suggestions. You have a 6.5” wrist, which is very slender.

Take a look through the comical threads here where others have posted watches that are clearly too big for their wrists.

I'm thinking the 36mm would suit me far better.
I've tried the 41mm many times in boutiques , they just make me look like I'm trying too hard to impress. The 36 doesn't.

I do love the yellow gold / steel combo but think it's versatility is lower than a plain steel.
Does anyone except any changes to the dj36 line up ?

I completely agree. Anything over 6.5” and you need at least 50mm.

I always find Rolex 36mm wears bigger than I think in photos! Maybe it's the lug-to-lug or the width of the lugs.

Great size anyway.

This is the only one I have on my phone and it’s from the last time I was on an airplane, which feels like a lifetime ago ;(

But yeah I find the 36mm a nice, understated size, which I like and fits my 6.75-7” wrist nicely imo. It sounds like you know what you want and I’d echo others that said it’s personal preference and it’s not a “bad investment” if this is what suits you well and what you’ll enjoy wearing.

If the question was “what watches are the best investments” then that’s a different conversation. But even then, I certainly wouldn’t call 36mm watches worse investments than 41mm, that’s just not how it works.

I had a dj36 and I’m only 5 foot 8 inches with average sized wrists but it looked too small on me, it looked more feminine. I ended up adding a after market diamond bezel and it added much needed “girth” to it. I recently sold it and tried on datejust 41 and was fearing it would be huge but I was surprised that it fit perfect! Wasn’t too big and definitely looked like a man’s watch and not my girlfriends time peice.

To be honest I have gone back and forth on this topic for many years. I have an 8.5" wrist so naturally I have gravitated towards larger watches: DSSD, 45mm PO etc... . I have tried several models of the DJ41, DJ11 etc... and I still like the proportions of the classic 36 DJ on my larger wrist. Cant go wrong with either though; best of luck!

If you are used to wearing larger watches say 40mm-42mm then yes a 36mm DJ would appear small but once you get accustomed to a 36mm it won't look small any longer.

I’d be curious to hear if anyone here thinks this looks too small for my wrist.
