Submariner vs Submariner date attainability
Does anyone know which one is easier to buy from AD, the classic Submariner or the Submariner date? Is one of them more "sought after"?

Submariner Date is harder. Simply due to demand and easier resale. More people want the cyclops than not. This is according to ADs I have spoken to.

Same situation here in Switzerland. Some AD's say that after COVID both became difficult t obtain due to shortages in production during the past couple of months.

I would say the opposite ... I see more Submariners dates than I do Submariners.
I suppose it depends on where you’re located. |

All 3 ads near me has zero sub or sub date. He actually received two requests the day I spoke to him for 114060. So in my opinion, what ever you can get your hand on get it.

I’ve heard from both trusted sellers and ADs that the Submariner date is more difficult to source due to higher demand. Been on a number of waitlists for awhile now despite previous purchase history.

Without any proof of this other than this board and a gut feeling, I think that most people if they aim to get that one Rolex, it is often the sub date. If people are collectors and like a variety, they go no date as other pieces in their collection will have the cyclops, plus the first sub did not have a date. That is probably why there is more of a demand for the date, thus making more.

You still can get date justs in steel without waitlists, but that’s about it. No professional models, not even sea dwellers or explorers even. I haven’t even seen any two tone subs. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Ive heard that the sub ND is harder to come by because they are produced in less quantity. Ive also heard that it is a 50/50 split in terms of attainability. In reality they are both readily available but you need a relationship with your AD to get one

They have plenty of models (other than BLRO or SKYD) for trial though. |

The bucherer In Bern still has a few date Justs in Steel. I bought mine 8 days ago, but I still want a ss sub. Yesterday. they had a few full stainless steel DJ 41 and 36 and a few with fluted bezels. No professional models though, except a skydweller in PM. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

It seems with the datejust, fluted and jubilee are harder to get. Then the dial color depending on which one makes it even harder. PM, diamonds, smooth bezel and sometimes oyster are a bit easier to find.

The AD's I've chatted with about this have said that they get more dates than no dates, but they have a longer waitlist for the dates and that the people on the waitlist for no dates are generally more collector types... which generally aligns with what JRell mentioned.

My AD told me the Sub has much less interest compared to date version.
P.S Is it still possible to get the 10-15% OFF discount on a Day Date 40 yellow gold? Just spoke to my AD and he seemed surprised to hear me asking about this .. I know up until recently you could easily get quite a bit off the 228238 .. |

Right now where I live, they are both equally unobtainable without a relationship with an AD. In terms of demand, it seems to me that the Sub Date is more popular with the masses—when your average person decides they want their first and only Rolex, assuming it’s a diver, they’re probably more likely to choose the Sub Date (both for the convenience of having the date functionality and for the sheer fact of having that cyclops lens which tells everyone it’s a Rolex even from a distance). To me, the Sub (ND) is more of an enthusiast/collector model and hence less sales volume. But this is really just academic—because let’s be real, we all know the Sub (ND) is the only “real” sub.

I beg to differ with the general consensus. Rolex makes less of the Submariner 114060 so I’d say it’s a toss up. I prefer the Submariner and so do many collectors. In general, The average Rolex buyer prefers the Sub date.

Hi Matt, the last time I saw any variant of a stainless steel Submariner at a London AD was back in 2015 and it was a 116610LV resting tepidly in a display case among a diverse mix of other stainless steel models. At that time I would potentially receive a small discount to purchase it. Walk-in availability in London for popular models since a little before 2015 continues to be dreadfully low.

Word from the ADs I’ve visited is that the Sub would be a shorter wait than the Sub Date. I think this is probably true, as most non-WIS might favor the date version.

Last year when I was back in England (home country) I visited an AD I have purchased from for 20 years, and was told 12-18 months for either Sub - so I don't think one or other is 'easier to get'. The rest of the world is crazy, but England is a standout when it comes to SS models being virtually unobtainable.

I don't know if this is representative of anything but I only waited 10 days for my 114060 back in November and that was at an AD I had no prior purchase history with. I have the good fortune of living in flyover country, however.

Go Submariner, so much more beautiful and rare in the wild than a Sub date. Enjoy and smile and forget it’s on you wrist.
