Let me introduce myself.

Just wanted to say hello to all the forum members and let you know who I am.

I'm always curious as to who else is in my trade, or working for a Rolex Jeweler. I've worked in highline jewelry sales since I was 19, I've worked for Authorised dealers since I turned 23. I graduated from an AWI program in 2004. Right now I am working in a mixed capactity. I sell jewelry and watches as well as doing all of the service work for the location I work for. How is that for a sales pitch. Buy a watch from the watchmaker.

hey...alright, can you give us some inside dirt...?

How do the omegas and the Breitlings and the Rolli really compare?

Which ones get brought in the most...

Like they say before buying a car...ask a mechanic which cars he sees the least.....

anyway, welcome to the forum, you'll have some fun here...

I'm torn... The three I've narrowed it to:

M serial GMT red/blue (should've bought the one I had in stock before katrina)
Don't get me wrong I like the new GMT IIc. BUT this is the one I wanted to buy when I first got into the company I work for.

Stainless/RG turnograph with the slate dial (currently have it in the case and it matches my wedding band)

Explorer II with white dial (I know these are on the chopping block and I want to snap one up)

Dunno, I see them, and put them in the case nearly every day, you could see why I have a hard time deciding, lol. I am going to buy a rolex for daily use though, I bought my wife the S/pl small Yactmaster. I don't particularly like the Gents model.

I was cautious of co-axial and plumed for the Omega Cal. 1128 based on the ETA 2892-A2. It seems to be extremely accurate and reliable. I think the co-axial has yet to prove itself.

Welcome and thank you for the interesting introduction.

I will always see more rolexes coming in for service, becasue rolex exports ~250,000 watches to north america every year. There have a staggering # of AD's in the U.S. In the city of New Orleans in a 15 square mile area there are 7 storefronts belonging to 3 different companies that sell Rolex. Each one of those stores carries up to 130 models @ full plan. Each of those dealers are capable of turning those cases 1.5x's a year. That boils down to roughly 1365 watches sold each year in a 15 square mile area. That is some serious exponential growth.

Watches like Breitling and Omega have one MAYBE two Ad's in a state. Breitling and omega are really a question of aesthetics though, both are powered by ETA calibres. You can't beat ETA in terms of reliability and repeatability.

Right about now somebody will scream "WHAT ABOUT THE COAXIAL MOVEMENTS" in Omega? The only movement made exclusively for that range, to my knowlege is the caliber used in the hour vision watches. The rest are altered ETA base with the co-axial bits added as an afterthought. I had many service related issues with those, De-Ville line especially. When they first came out. More recently with a 007 seamaster, it went back 3 times in six months. I FINALLY cleaned it at no charge, I felt bad for the guy and it this point it was my ass on the line more than OMEGA.

I will state that I do not buy into the salespitch of longer accuracy (10yr service interval) for a co-axial movement. 1/2 of the ones sold had trouble keeping accuracy for the first year. Kind of sucks too I really liked the Planet Ocean line of watches, but I became more and more reluctant to push them, even though I was selected to be a brand ambassador for them, the curse of watchmaking my friends. I refused to lie to customers just because I could get a free watch. I mean face it Omega is kind of the mediocre middle between TAG and Breitling. Omega thinks they can catch-up/overtake Rolex as a major player in the watch industry in the next 10yr period.

Co-axial asshattery aside omega isn't that bad of a watch. I kinda gravitate towards the moonwatch (manual wind speedmaster) in OMEGA (non-co-axial) and the Chronotimer in Breitling. It should be noted the movement in the Chronotimer is a reproduction of a movement co-manufatured with Heuer Back in the day.

Steve...you will be very popular here. great answer. Thanks for that.

I mention Omega and Breitling because along with Rolex, those are the bulk of my collection...along with a pam and a couple tags...

I have to say that the omegas have been the best for me as far as accuracy and reliability (unless you count the quartz tag by which I set them all).

now you just need to pick an avatar so that we can instantly identify you..

Great to read your comments further down in the thread! I agree with Superdoc. Share your comments and experiences!

Since you seem to know what you're talking about I can not do anything but recommend the Explorer II with white dial. I agree with you about "the chopping block", and perhaps you know something more about it...please tell... this is the reason why I recently bought one. The TOG will be here for a while, so there is no need to be in a hurry for that one, and the GMT... it should really be a plexi one, shouldn't it?

Some food for thought (I use my watches as they were intended to...):

Best,

A
