I went from a 34 (Oyster Date) to a 42 (DJII) to a 36 (DJ and Explorer). 36mm remains a sweet spot among my other larger watches.

If you love the watch but feel it’s too small and that you should have gone with the larger dial do it…I wouldn’t worry who else has done it before.

I haven’t personally done the switch but my wife has and she went from a 26 to a 40. And her new watch doesn’t look out of place.

I tried watches in a variety of sizes from 36 to 44mm. 40mm (ish) Rolex seem to suit me best.

I went from a 36MM to 39MM Explorer I. My wife wears a 36MM Datejust which I think looks great on her smaller wrists. My wrists are pretty small at about 6.70 inches. I also have a 36MM Datejust but am considering going to 41MM.


No wrong decision in my opinion. Life is short.

Gabbs, the photo you posted (in a different thread) after you bought your DJ 31mm was stunning. The watch looked perfect on your wrist. My vote would be for you to stick with the 31mm.

I wear a 28mm Lady Datejust. It’s a two-tone Everose with a Sundust dial. Before I got it, I had worn a 27mm Tag Heuer for many, many years, so when Hubs said he wanted to buy me the Rolex, I didn’t even think about a size other than the 28mm. I suppose a 31mm would look fine on my wrist, but my wrist right now is barely over 6” so I think what I have is perfect. My wrist was about 6.5” when I got the Rolex almost 2.5 years ago, but I’ve lost weight (and am still losing), so going to a larger watch isn’t on my radar. I want to wear the watch, I don’t want the watch to wear me, if you know what I mean. I don’t want to flash “look at my Rolex!”

Funny you ask, because I actually went through this exact situation! I had a 36mm Rolex Datejust that I absolutely loved, but over time I started feeling like I wanted something with a bit more wrist presence. I was torn because the configuration—blue dial, fluted bezel, Jubilee bracelet—was perfect, and I didn’t want to lose that.

After a lot of back and forth, I found an AD willing to work with me on trading my 36mm for the 41mm version in the exact same configuration. When I finally got the larger size, it felt like I was still wearing the same watch I loved, but with that extra oomph I was looking for. It was honestly the best of both worlds. So, if you’re feeling like the next size up is calling your name, it might be worth the switch! Just make sure you try it on to be sure it gives you that perfect fit.

How did you get an AD to do this? I was thinking only way to do it would be to go gray.

Technically the OP is asking if anyone has downsized a watch of the exact configuration. Meaning, let’s say… a large silver dial OP down to a 36mm or a 41mm DJ with fluted bezel, sticks, and black dial on jubilee for exactly the same color and configuration but in 36mm.

I’m sure there are quite a few, but I would find it a little less satisfying to “use an allocation” on an a smaller identical reference. I’d want it to feel more like a “new to me” watch by having at least something different.

liked the classic 36 , but love the weight of hold on DD40, so then hod it RG and WG!

When I 1st started buying nice watches I went with Tag 28mm. I quickly realized that was too small. I now wear anywhere from 36-42mm. I find a lot of women strart out small and realize 36mm is the way to go.

Do it! You obviously love the configuration, but would like more wrist presence. I think because I really am into watches, I’ve always gone big. When I see what women wore years ago, they do nothing for me, and my taste tends toward more sporty, anyway. 36 mm is my sweet spot. I have larger watches, as well, but feel that 36 suits me best. My very first Rolex was a 34 mm OP, which my adult son confiscated, with my permission, of course. 36 is a great size, for anyone, as long as their wrist isn’t super tiny. Personally, I might consider wearing a 31, but only if it were super dressy, with diamond accents. I vote you go for the 36 in your current DJ.

I did. Went from a 36mm Datejust to a 41. And it fit me substantially better.
