Are RM movements actually bad?

I think highly of RMs for their producing watches of interesting materials and also the technology behind the watches (like being lightweight, or super thin) but are the movements really that bad? I don’t see this mentioned much and just ran into this topic when I watched ProducerMicahel videos.

they're not bad.
they are made by AP&R - essentially producing movements for AP Concepts as well
technologically advanced movements.
reliability, not so sure, never own one long enough to know

They also have an in-house movement, IE RM72. They are moving more towards in-house movements, which IMO, at these prices should be demanded. I've owned several RMs now, never had a single issue with reliability and I wore/traveled/swam with them often. Some are quite the engineering feat, like the cable suspended tourb movement.

Richard Mille RM65-01
watches with vaucher

Richard Mille timepieces are the ultimate status symbol of wristwear in the modern world. Their highly technical watches and incredibly engineered calibres are often the results of partnerships with external movement manufactures such as Renaud Et Papi (also known as APRP – Audemars Piguet Renaud Papi) which Audemars Piguet has a 78% stake in. But some of Richard Mille’s movements are developed by Vaucher as well, notably the RMAC4 found inside their highly complicated automatic rattrapante chronograph RM65-01. The RMAC4 is based on the Vaucher VMF 6710, but it is the perfect example of a manufacturer making a sourced design their own.

Just a copy and paste of an article.
So, no looks like chronographs for RM are made by Vaucher.

72-01 is first in house chrono movement made by RM.

65-01 is made by third party APRP.

That brand is the biggest joke you can imagine.

Are they bad ? NO

But they ask 5 times to much for what you get compared to others. But as usual some people don't know what they pay for and they just want something to show of ... How pathetic can it be

If you're old enough to remember the year 2000 well enough...Back then there were no iPhones and the best selling phone was Nokia.
They made great but pretty simple phones ( smartphone did not exist) and the price was a couple of hundred to let's say 600 for the top range. Well at the same time there existed a brand called Vertu. They were NOT better , just looked a bit more fancy ...but somehow they pretended to offer something very unique for the elite ( or probably better said for the people dumb enough to pay for it)
Anyway, they made phones starting from 3000 up to 20000

That to me is exactly the same as Richard Mille today.
Is a Richars mille costing 500,000 a bad watch ? No it is not but you paid probably 425,000 too much

Isn’t that the same for all price ranges ?
A 100$ Seiko 5 is doing the same as a 10K Rolex.

Back to the past I used Vertu phones for years and some components were really way better than your regular Nokia i.e. the Yamaha speakers which still blows away any modern phone. Full metal body, buttons and leather accents. Pieces of art they were.

This discussion is healthy. It reminds me of the athletic shoe market, form vs function, and personal choice being bent by famous brand(s)...let me spin a story for you that avoids the pitfalls of minutiae.

It all begins in a modern city beset with brand envy and a nice girl needing new sneakers....

In the bustling city of Metropolis, two brands dominated the sneaker market:

Air Apex was renowned for its sleek, sculptural designs, often seen adorning the feet of influencers and celebrities. With a price tag that could easily exceed a month's rent, their shoes were the epitome of high fashion.

Simple Stride, on the other hand, offered a range of sneakers that were reliable and affordable, focusing on comfort and durability without the frills.

One sunny afternoon, Mia, a young graphic designer, found herself in need of new sneakers. She had admired the Apex sneakers from afar, captivated by their elegant lines and vibrant colors. However, the price left her hesitant.

Meanwhile, she had seen her friend Alex wearing a pair of Stride sneakers that were functionally similar, albeit without the runway flair.

Mia visited the local sneaker store and tried on both brands. The moment she slipped on the Stride sneakers, she felt an immediate comfort that enveloped her feet. The cushioning was soft, and the fit was perfect—just what she needed for long hours spent on her feet at work.

After trying on the Apex sneakers, Mia was struck by their aesthetic. They were stunningly beautiful, with a design that felt almost like wearable art. The high price tag felt more like a payment for the brand’s image than for genuine quality.

In that moment, Mia realized that while Apex offered a striking form, Stride championed function.

In Metropolis, where form often overshadowed function, Mia had found her balance, ready to take on the world, one comfortable step at a time.

I hope I wasn't too vague...

They are good movements, made by APRP, Vaucher, inhouse and maybe some others?

Whether they are worth the price is how much you buy into their marketing. Same can be said at all price ranges, i.e. is a Sub worth $10k vs is a RM-005 worth $60k (or whatever they are in after market)? Both have high mark ups compared to their manufacture costs due to the huge marketing costs both companies spend.

For something with little of the hand finishing I value, I'm not sure I can make the pricing make sense.

As for the movements, I will say it's an open secret Rafa's RM broke repeatedly. Some claims should be taken lightly. But otherwise, lots of guys wearing a shirt unbuttoned enough to show some chest hair in Miami wearing an RM seem happy enough. And Vaucher makes good movements. And APRP are great at what they do.

Personally, I think GF should be eating RM's lunch in the absurdly priced sports watch world.
