Purchase advice

Hello,
I am after a bit more advice on another Rolex purchase. This time I have a budget of £8000. My question is do I buy new or pre owned, and what collection/model would you go for?

Thank you

Neil

Hi Neil,

If you have patience start a relationship with an AD. If you have no patience, then buy grey market. I had some money and went to an AD and started a relationship with him and bought my first Datejust watch. I went back 2 weeks later and financed a Vacheron Constantin. Now, I get a call almost every 2 months for a new watch. It all worked out for me.

I would wait it out. Build a relationship with your AD. These watches aren't going anywhere.

Hi NebHusker, Could I ask what does AD stand for?

They’re going up.

Wait, play the AD game, no luck. Meanwhile the watch you want is only increasing in market price.

I bought my 116500ln for $23k last year. It’s a watch I wanted then and still want (have) now. Had I tried to play the AD game only to realize it would never come…I’d be stuck with looking at its current market price of around $36k from afar.

An AD is a Rolex "Authorized Dealer". Build a relationship with one, and buy new. Find a model you like and go after it. Happy Hunting.

Ok great, that helps. How about a nice, pre-owned Explorer I 39mm Mark 2 dial (with the full lume). I was just looking at a pristine, pre-owned example from 2020 (from a reputable online seller on this forum) in your price range. If 39mm is not a good fit for you, Rolex does make a current production Exp 36 model, but you will have to work through an 'authorized dealer' (or also known as 'Official Rolex Jeweler') by introducing yourself and being patient. A late-production, pre-owned Sub Date (reference model 16610) might be a nice alternative since you don't have a dive watch. This is the previous generation Sub (with aluminum bezel insert) that was made from approx 1988 to around 2011. They come in at your price range. I picked up one last summer from a reseller on this forum and couldn't be happier with it. Hope this is somewhat helpful.

Definitely don’t go grey, build a “Relationship” with an AD, this means:

1. Buy watches and jewelry you don’t need.
2. Stop by a few times per month, enough to be a nuisance, tell him stories he has heard from hundreds of people walking in, and definitely bring some chocolates or gifts for him and the other SA’s.
3. This is the most important step, offer your first born child to him in exchange for selling a watch to you.

The above works 100% of the time.

Only you can make that decision for yourself. Research a bunch and find out what “sings to you” and then talk to your local AD about how to acquire it. Good luck OP.

Thank you all for your replies and advice. I do have a few to choose from in my price range so I will be busy for next few weeks/months. I will update once a purchase has been made.

Thank you
Neil

Good luck. Buy what you like. I went grey as I have only ONE AD in my city. I bought a BB58 (which I like a lot) from them to start the relationship. Did it work? I am still waiting.

114270, 214270, 16570, 14060, 16610, 16600. Use WatchRecon to search. Good luck!

I'd try to find a nice sub in your price point.
