1998 Rolex 16610 Submariner Swiss Only Dial - Engraved Christopher Wreh Arsenal
This particular model hails from the celebrated Submariner line, renowned for its blend of rugged functionality and refined aesthetics. The reference 16610 is a classic in its own right, known for its robust stainless steel construction, precision automatic movement, and water resistance up to 300 meters.
What sets this piece apart, however, is its 'Swiss Only' dial. This unique feature dates back to a brief period in the late 1990s when Rolex transitioned from tritium to Luminova for its luminescent material. This watch is a Swiss Only dial, these dials were produced in a limited run between 1998/1999. Prior to 1998 dials used tritium lume and were signed ‘Swiss – t <25’, in 1998 Rolex introduced Luminova and changed the dial to ‘Swiss’ only. Shortly after Rolex switched to Super Luminova and adjusted the dial to ‘Swiss Made’. The serial begins with U88xxxx dating this watch correctly to late 1998. Watches produced during this time bear the 'Swiss Only' mark on their dials, making them highly sought-after by collectors worldwide. The watch features a 40mm case, offering a substantial yet comfortable presence on the wrist. Its unidirectional rotatable bezel with a scratch-resistant black insert allows for safe timing of dive sessions or other events. The dial, in classic black, offers excellent contrast with its white hour markers and Mercedes hands, both filled with luminescent material for optimal legibility under all lighting conditions. Additionally, the date window at 3 o'clock, magnified by Rolex's signature Cyclops lens, ensures easy reading of the date. With its combination of enduring style, robust performance, and unique historical significance, the Rolex Submariner with 'Swiss Only' dial is more than just a timepiece; it's a conversation piece, a testament to Rolex's horological heritage. In addition to the scarce Swiss Only dial this watch is believed to have been gifted to Christopher Wreh due to the engraving on the back. Christopher Wreh, the unforgettable Arsenal Striker, was born on May 14, 1975, in Monrovia, Liberia, Christopher Wreh is a retired professional footballer best known for his time as a striker at Arsenal Football Club. His arrival at Highbury in the summer of 1997 was no coincidence, as he had previously worked with manager Arsene Wenger. Wreh made a lasting impression by occasionally stealing headlines with his performances. He made a total of 28 league appearances for the club and scored three goals, demonstrating his talent on one of the biggest stages in football. One of Wreh's most significant achievements was becoming the first African player to receive an English Premier League medal after Arsenal won both the Premier League and FA Cup. This accomplishment has etched his name into the annals of football history. Wreh's contribution to Arsenal during a pivotal period in their history, and his status as a trailblazer for African players in the Premier League, ensures his place in football lore. His time at Arsenal that continues to define his legacy in the world of football.
