Funny/awkward interactions

So I was reading the thread about “box and papers bro???” And then read the original story… it got me thinking about funny/awkward interactions I’ve had regarding my watches. Let’s see who’s got the best story!

I was getting my Jeep Wrangler serviced and went into the service office to sign some paperwork. The guy working the counter was my age (he told me he graduated high school in 2009). After a few minutes of him typing away I walked away to look at some accessories for sale. He noticed my white ceramic Daytona, and said “hey I love your watch I have the same one!” I responded and said something along the lines of “that’s awesome, I’ve never seen another one”. He then asked “it’s an invicta right?”

I didn’t want to sound like a snob and correct him and say it was a Rolex so I just said it’s not an invicta.

I thought he was trolling me for a second but he wasn’t. I got a kick out of it. My wife was with me and made fun of me (and my weird watch hobby) after.

I still think the “box and papers bro???” Story is better. But let’s hear others!

A pic of my “invicta” for added spice

Edit:
I have never had anyone notice any of my Rolex watches before, and prefer it that way. The only watch I ever get compliments on is my shinola.

The funny story is that I'm traveling a lot around the world and nobody noticed my Rolex watches ever.

I was in Las Vegas last year. I was wearing my Submariner and walking around in either the Venetian or Paris. Don't rememeber which one.

Suddenly, a very attractive women approached me and said, "sir, that is a very nice watch."

I said "thank you very much."

She then suddenly started to try to sell me a condonimium. So disapointing...

A 12 yo patient of mine was leaving his appointment. Came closer to me and said, “I really like your Citizen watch.” I was wearing my BLNR on jubilee. I didn’t correct him, but got a kick of the fact that he appreciated mechanical timepieces!

To those who think no one ever notices their watch, I would beg to differ. I notice watches almost every time I go out, but have only said something one time! Believe me, people notice.

My story....I would call it more unnerving than funny, but my wife and I were walking around an outlet center in Las Vegas and a kiosk employee made a comment about my 116619 (aka Smurf to those who aren't urked by nicknames). We were probably 10-15 feet apartment, so he was speaking very loudly almost yelling. I kinda nodded in appreciation and kept walking. I happened to pass this same guy at a different location and he again made a very loud comment. Me and my wife are now retired, but were both police officers at the time and immediately thought we were being marked. A short time later we walked by the kiosk again on the way out and you guessed it, another overly loud comment. We didn't know when it was coming, but we fully anticipated an attempted robbery was coming. (I can't discuss the specific topic on TRF, but I'm sure you can imagine how trying to rob two police officers would go terribly wrong )

This was not the first time that watch had garnered unwanted attention and we had discussed me selling it just for that reason. The Vegas incident seemed kinda like a strong sign, after the thought was already there, so I traded it shortly after that trip. I immediately regretted it and even more so now because it is well out of my budget to obtain again. Oh well, live and learn - watch your six, Rolex wearers! People notice, whether you think so or not.

I was going through airport security with my sub c (2018) and walked through the machine that makes you put your hands up. I guess the metal from my watch showed up on the scan so the TSA (older man) looked at my watch.

He said something along the lines of: Nice sub, mine went through Vietnam and two divorces as he raised his wrist and showed me his.

Was my coolest Rolex interaction thus far.

Oddly enough someone at a different airport said "nice watch" to me while I was wearing the same sub. It was a young person probably around 30 years old. All he said was "nice watch" in a very respectful way.

I agree with donas. Despite no one commenting on my watches, I would imagine that some people notice them.

donas - I assume no one tried to rob you then, so do you still think you were being marked?

The day remained uneventful, thankfully. We'll never know, but yes, we think he was trying desperately to point us out to someone. The comments were over the top, like, "whoa, nice white gold Rolex man", "wow, look at that gold Rolex". They didn't seem like the usual, "nice watch" comment. I'm no superman, but I wouldn't try to rob me if there were easier pray about. My wife and I were both young, fit, and carry ourselves with confidence.

Maybe we were looking too much into the situation, maybe we just got lucky, or maybe someone higher protected us; no matter what, we were thankful.

I got one or two comments on my bluesy when I had it, which was one of the reasons I got rid of it (it's kind of flashy). I got a compliment on my "batman" (I hate that nickname) in Vegas from a watch salesman and from an Armani salesman in NYC, who was wearing an older GMT IIRC.

I complimented my roofing salesman on his YM, and he seemed embarrassed that I noticed and mentioned it.

I also found this to me amazing! Nobody or hardly ever comments on my watches. Most people probably think is an “invicta” or “Michael Kors”.

I kind of like it like that- I don’t have to worry to much about getting robbed when I’m walking in sketchy neighborhoods I’m Brooklyn or Queens.

Yes they are. I wear sleeves everywhere. The fashion show mall jewelry cleaner is the worst at screaming "let me clean your Rolex bro!"

People don't often remark on my Rolexes. But the Apple store geniuses almost always comment on a Tudor if I'm wearing one. They seem to love the Tudor watches

Back in the mid-90s I was visiting a small Mexican town with one of my girlfriends who was a Navy nurse at Balboa. We are in a small store well off the main drag when from across the room, the old shopkeeper begins moving towards us and saying something. My arm was on her shoulder so his approach and not knowing what he was saying caught my attention.

I looked right into his eyes and he stopped a few feet away, became silent, and walked back to the other side of the shop. After we walked outside my girl, who understood the man, asked why he said I was an "important man." I said I had no idea and maybe it had to do with my watch since I could easily tell he was looking right at it at times during his approach.

She grabbed my wrist, looked at my watch closely, and was shocked. She then asked if I was crazy...I smiled and confidently said yes. She grabbed my arm and begged me to take her back to our room since she was feeling crazy right now also.

I think people do notice more so now than ever. I had my Batman on checking out at whole foods. The guy behind was staring at it but didn’t say anything. Earlier this same week had it on again at cvs and someone commented and said beautiful watch. I always notice but I’m a watch geek like most here. I do think more and more people are noticing as social media hype has played up the watches.

Funny/awkward interactions

Had a few people comment on my watch but the most uncomfortable was last year at Penn Station in NYC. I was in town for a business dinner and traveling with colleagues. On the way back the train was delayed and we were sitting in a waiting area. There was a guy sitting close by with a bunch of shopping bags from high end stores and he had to be on drugs or something because he was talking really loud and staring directly at me! He was going on about “kicking someone’s ass, and he’s not going to take any BS, he just won $6,000 gambling…” At this point my colleagues are looking at me like “Who’s your new friend?” He starts pulling things out of his bag - a LV wallet, a scarf, and then he shows me his watch - a Skagen he said he paid $600 for at Macy’s. He said it’s good and the battery lasts for 5 years. Then he says “Nice Rolex”. I just replied “Oh it’s fake” and then tried to find a way to get the hell out of there since none of my colleague came to my rescue and walked off! Stranger danger!

So yes, your watch may get noticed more often than you think.

Agreed, I think more people notice than not, but very very few have the front to mention it to a stranger. It's a fairly personal remark, like admiring someone's trousers. These are ostentatious watches, and the notion that "no-one notices" is self-deception, IMO.
