Winding From a Dead Stop, Is This Normal? Sea Dweller 4000

If I let the watch run out it seems to take at least 25 to 30 turns of the crown winder before the watch re starts.

Is that simply to overcome inertia, or are Rolex specifically designed not to start until:

a) They have been physically wound?
b) They have a minimally sufficient power reserve built in the mainspring?

Is it accurate to say that they will not start from movement alone; i.e. they have to be wound at least partially from the crown?

It will start from movement alone but won't run very long.

Normal, I would think...as long as the rest of the watch functions are OK.

25-30 full turns, that doesn't seem normal.

Yea that's why I questioned it. It runs great otherwise. Usually with my other watches the second hand will start within 5 to 6 turns, not this one.

There's nothing wrong with your watch.

Give it a little shake after 5-6 turns and it will get going.

ALL of my Rolex start between 8-10 turns..25-30 seems to be a bit much honestly but then again the newest piece I own is a Z serial...

The real question to ask is if it's keeping good time and has an appropriate power reserve after a full wind. If it takes 20 turns vs 10 to get going but is otherwise perfectly fine, I don't see the problem.

Pre-service for 7 years - my GMT if it 'ran out', only took say 12 turns then would start up and away it went,
Post-service last week - came to me 'dead' and took around 20 turns before it started to run, however I did not try to 'shake it to wake it' before those 20 turns. pmsl.

In my experience, all my modern Rolex (DBlue, BLNR, DJ2) take about 20 - 25 turns from a dead stop.
My 5513 only takes about 5 turns to start.

Send it back for a full service or replacement.

Mine only takes 21-24 full turns before it starts up.

I think the problem is what some of us mean by "full turn". One person could interpret a full turn as the amount the crown turns when your thumb and index finger move in opposite directions. Another could think it means when the crown actually makes a 360.

my 16600 takes about 12 winds to start going. I think a wind or turn is subjective to the user.

my 1603 takes the slightest of shakes and it's running.

It's Perfectly normal!

To clarify a wind, or turn, it is the completed action of rolling your fingers over the crown. It isn't the count of a full 360 degree revolution of the crown itself...

Normal. Do a search in here for more info. If I have to wind my Rolex it gets 20 or so turns. Same with my Omega. My IWC goes after about 10.

Exactly and even after a wind they still may need a slight swirl to get them ticking again all normal.

That's what I experience when I start the engine, I mean the movement. Without a little shake it will take longer for the watch to run
