I did a search of this on TRF, and didn't see any previous posts, so here goes. I stumbled across the National Geographic "Voyage To The Bottom Earth" documentary last night, that provides details about Camerons record setting dive to the lowest point on earth. I didn't think the film would be edited and ready to air that quickly. It runs 30 mins. A few minutes in Rolex is mentioned, and I've uploaded a clip of the Rolex details (Four Rolex watches went on this dive, not one!). It`s interesting to see the effort Rolex made to make the watch look like a regular production piece rather than a one off special.

Yes...reminds me of NASCAR. The resemblance is to help sell the pedestrian models in the showrooms.

I saw the show a week or 2 ago. It was quite interesting...especially all of the obstacles they faced and the problems they had to overcome. Scary stuff!

Maybe the pressure is so great that the helium escape value would compromise the integrity of the oyster case.

Which makes a person wonder how they managed to take it that deep and come back up without a pressure relief valve of some sort

.... am I missing something here? Maybe there is one, it just isn't a typical valve in the typical spot...

Actually it is of no use on this watch. The only time it is needed when a diver does compression stops in Helium enriched air. The helium will seep past the seals, and needs a release mechanism to keep from blowing the crystal off the watch. This particular watch is never exposed to high pressure helium, hence no release valve.
