5040g
Hi all. I'm considering a Patek 5040g that has come up locally. I always thought a Patek PC would be unachievable (I hate to use the word "grail") and previously bought a 5396r with breguet numerals as a compromise. That went in exchange for an AP, which has now also gone (too blingy) but a Patek PC is close to the top of the tree for me.
Movement seems tried and tested. Case shape is different, which is like. Dial layout is traditional and to my eyes uncontroversial. Size appears small on paper but videos online look fine for the style of watch. Newer PCs seem to have just slightly upsized the casing and made small tweaks to dials. Anything that should turn me away from a 5040g? I appreciate it is a "cheap" Patek PC but I am not sure why that is, and there is always a reason for such things. Alternative I also considered is an AP 26000PT but that is about 35% more expensive and perhaps going away from what that brand is best know for, whereas the Patek PC seems to sit squarely in the brands identify. Thoughts? Comments? Criticisms? Thankyou! Sent from my SM-G780G using Tapatalk

The 5040g is an outstanding watch and I’d guess the square/tonneau shape is one reason for its lack of desire ability. The same movement powers the Nautilus 5740 so you at least get to share in that (movement wise)
If it fits nice on your wrist and you like the looks, go for it. This hobby is for enjoyment. But if the past is any indication, the unloved models can become popular with time. |

Based on looks alone I'd rather go 5940 than 5040 for a 240 powered Patek PC with an unconventional case shape.

Thankyou for the comments. Part of the appeal of the 5040 is the relatively low entry price for a Patek PC so I am not considering other models. While I appreciate some later models may be more popular, have a more modern sized case etc part of the attraction here is in the technicality of the watch, the fact it shares a movement with much more expensive variants and is still used today. It feels like a "sleeper" piece with my WIS hat on.
I would likely be trading a Vacheron Overseas three hander blue dial to fund if I pull the trigger. While that is a nice watch, prices are broadly similar and given I don't wear it much (I have other steel sports watches I prefer) it feels like swapping into a Patek grand comp could be a smart move horologically speaking.
