Is my local AD going to be pissy?

Having purchased my YM in Europe 2 weeks ago (my wife surprised me on our anniversary vacation) I have to wonder how my local AD is going to react the first time I bring it in for service or just come in wearing it.

I have looked at time pieces in his shop a half a dozen times and the owner is a very good guy. With this said, I didn't waste a lot of his time looking at his stock. Probably an hour total, both looking at and having enjoyable discussions with him about Rolex's.

I have to admit that if I were him I would be a bit disappointed that I didn't purchase the watch from him and I somewhat apprehensive as to how he may react when he sees me come in with it. The truth is if my wife hadn't pulled the trigger for me in Europe I probably would have purchased the watch at his store, but again I don't believe he could have matched the price point at which we purchased the YM at Bucherer's in Lucerne with the 15% discount and no taxes or duties.

Has anyone had any experience with a AD that has been miffed by your purchase of your Rolex elsewhere?

well - tell them you got a very good discount. so that is why you bought elsewhere. At the end of the day they are an AD- not your best friend. it will be no problem i would think

Yeah. This was kinda my thinking also, but the shop is a small one and the owner is exceptional.

I will be buying another Rolex or two in the future so the way he reacts may be the determining factor as to whether he gets the business or not. I have enjoyed our discussions and have purchased my wife a LOT of jewelry there so he can't be too immature about it, now can he?

I would imagine that he probably wouldn't really care.

One watch aint gonna make or break his business!

I would tend to agree with this. If he is serious about keeping you as a customer he will be cool with it.

If he ever asks you anything, tell him "It was a present".
There, he'll know that you had no control over where the YM was purchased.

That's business, your a smart consumer and you went for the best deal. He has absolutely no right to be upset with you, if he does, hand him a tissue and tell him to give you a better deal next time if he wants your business.

I would not worry about it. Or, go in with the specific intent on talking about it and let him know that you value his business and will purchase from him. There are many options for buying these treasures... But, having a relationship with an AD can be very rewarding on many levels. So, maybe just approach the situation with him. This stuff is not personall.

When my wife and I go to look at cars on a car lot. If we test drive something she walks away feeling that we "owe" them the sale because he went for a 20 minute drive with us. That is business. I wish customers that I fly 6,000 miles to show a product with a technician had such loyalty.....

I have had a relationship with my AD for about five years. I purchased one of my watches overseas during this period and he knows about it - it goes through him for servicing. Two years ago I did make a watch purchase from his stock, plus a bit of jewelry over the years, and currently - after a 18 month waitlist - there is a SS Daytona in his safe with my deposit on it.

I know the name of his kids and he knows the names of mine. We are not "friends" in the pure sense, but if he is not busy with customers, we will sit down and B.S. about watches, cars, and life.

However, he is like this with all his customers and even though he has since moved 50 miles from his original location, his "old" customer base makes the trip to see him. Obviously, myself included.

Why take any chances. If you hang around here you'll be buying one or more very soon anyway and probably from him.

I agree with Lamone, you're an "innocent bystander." Say, "While window shopping, my wife and I noticed this watch I'm wearing in the window of an AD. It was quite a surprise to me that she slipped back and bought it for me as a momento from your fabulous vacation together."

What the heck is he going to say then?

We all think we're more significant than we really are to our doctors, dentists, veterinary surgeons, solicitors etc. As for our AD's do they feel guilty when they skip us & sell a SS Daytona to an undeserving case? I think not!

If you're that bothered when the time comes send it to RSC for service directly yourself.

Enjoy the watch & many congrats

There is way too much psychology read into how AD's treat people. For the most part, they are there to do business (commissioned sales reps excluded). I am sure they try to work relationships where they can - but most 'high rollers' are just fronts for watch flippers trying to make a quick buck. I have no interest in keeping in contact with the AD I bought from - if I want another watch, I am in their database and can remind them I am a loyal customer.

I'll get off my soapbox now!

Your AD is a retail business professional and he knows that the client, his wishes
his actions and his decisions RULE.
Not a problem, in fact if he is good in what he does, he will be pleased you are happy.
If not, guess what..in the luxury retail business, it is a buyers market...ALWAYS

The truth is that if your AD is a successful business person they will service you with a smile and take care of anything you need. That is called cementing a relationship. My wife has bought a few Rolexes while traveling and my AD, who has also sold me a ton of jewelry, is most gracious about anything that we need.
However, I am sure there are AD's who are so full of themselves, they will try to make you feel awkward, almost guilty about this situation....to the AD's disadvantage.
Business is business.

By the way, 15% off and no tax on the YM is a fair deal, but I think that is the going price today.
Right Tempo?

Why would you go into the store if you're not going to buy another watch?

Just go in and buy another Rolex, and if he notices yours say that it was a present. That way he'll be happy that you bought one from him and he'll have a satifactory anwser as to how you got your new one.

Good clear answers one and all! Especially saying that it was a gift which is the absolute truth.

Right Tempo?
Agreed. I have no delusions about doing business with AD's. Even in Europe.

When we returned from Europe of course I did some research and found I did pay the going online price for the YM with a black MOP dial. I also found that I couldn't find many of them. I guess there are not very popular.
