Day date 18238 v 118238

Hello all,
Debating between the YG DD 18238 and 118238.
I understand the difference in weight and polished lugs and convex glass.
I read that the early 118238 produced were fitted with the old bracelet (83858). How can I tell the difference on the 118238 if it has the newer bracelet. Obviously if paying for the 118238, I want to be sure has all the “updates” over the 18238.

The first batch of the 6 digit has the old style clasp.
Just ask for a clear picture of the clasp to see if it is the newer one.
Also a great way to see how much it is polished. Often you see the crown on the clasp completely ‘grinded’ away which would be a show stopper for me.

Second ask for a picture which shows the wear of the bracelet.
A refurb of the bracelet sets you back 2K easily.

I prefer the brushed lugs of the 5 digit

Brushed lugs on the 5 digits as opposed to polished on the 6, as per illiguy above.

for me, personally, I'd go with the 18238 every day of the week - double on Sunday's! The 6 digits are... less charming, let's say.

I really love the 118238. Solid bracelet gives it a great heft, but not overwhelming with the 36mm case. Mine has the older style clasp, but doesn’t impact wearability.

Can you elaborate on the clasp difference?

Also, maybe it is just bc of age. But I feel like the actual gold band of the 5 digit is less bright/darker and and the newer 6 digit is brighter/ less dark yellow. Is there something to that or just an age thing ?
Is there any difference in the champagne dial color on the 2?

Old clasps are friction fit, thinner, have a line gap down the middle. They start popping open easily over time and need to be tightened back up every now and again.

Newer clasps are wider, have no hole gap in the middle, have beak/hook mechanism, feel and are more secure when closed. They are a big improvement over the old clasps.

I much prefer the 6 digits having upgraded from the 5 digits.

This is the old one and it’s red gold.

That’s true and the old one is easy to adjust but the feel of the new one is better imho. Same like the clasps on the 5 digit vs 6 digit SS models.

The early 18238s were indeed offered with the older adjustable “buckle” type bracelet clasp, but I think the OP is asking about the difference between the two types of non-adjustable hidden clasp.

118238 came in 2000, iirc the new hidden clasp was added in 2002 or 2003. Personally, I don’t think there is much practical difference, but if it’s important to you, it’s very easy to see the differences between it and the one pictured above.

The new clasp or “Fat Buckle” as some refer to it came in 2003. I have owned both and while both are Amazing the latter 118238 is just a better watch in my opinion. It has a much more solid feel that goes beyond just the weight and I think it wears larger then the 18238 if you are wanting somewhat of a more sporty look. I do think the brushed lugs do look better then the polished but aside of that I think 118238 is the leader of the 2

At the end of the day buy what you like. I sure did!

I have had both. The six digit feels much better, and more balanced on the wrist.
