Rolex vs Tudor

I’m curious, besides price (which I understand) why do some opt for Tudor over a Rolex?

the pelagos is a better tool watch than a rolex. a 70 hour power reserve is great. lume is fantastic and rolex doesnt make a lumed bezel (yet).

the black bay s&g is something different than a tt subc and i already have a subc. but i wanted some subtle bling and could not yet afford my grail 116618lb.

now, bring on the haters.

My opinion - in brief - is that the engineering quality is very different as well as the perceived value of the brands in the consumer markets both are trying to reach
If you buy Tudor it is price and an acceptance of the above
Doesn’t mean I think Tudor make bad watches they’re just a distance from Rolex

Could be any multitude of reasons. Maybe they like that particular design over anything else Rolex has to offer. Maybe they just can't get whatever particular Rolex so they went with the similar Tudor model. Maybe they flipped a coin.

In my case particularly, I couldn't afford to add a 16520 into my collection and I loved the Tudor 79260 just as much. It also came with a date which I prefer.

they depreciate but if you buy smart you limit the depreciation. if you buy a black bay gmt at msrp they arent depreciating much right now.

Tudor is Tudor and Rolex is Rolex. Buy what you like.
Also, one is half the price of the other. Or less. And many agree the price/quality ratio is spot on.
And yes, I prefer a Tudor. To each his own

Variety. I don’t have a Tudor (yet) but find that they in many ways are what Rolex used to be. Tough, not flashy, tools, great movements and a price to value ratio better in many ways than Rolex. Case in point is the black bay chrono, just put it on your wrist and you will see what I am talking about.

I bought the Tudor GMT because I like the styling over many Rolex designs. That being said if I could afford a Rolex Rose Gold DD or Patek 5711R things would be different. So while price isn't a driving factor for me most of the Rolex models I would prefer over Tudor are extremely more expensive. When comparing modern sport models Tudor wins for me every time. I do own a Rolex Polar 216570 but I feel that's a style in its own also.

I have 2 Tudor’s
Black Bay Red with the original ETA with a Rose, that came on leather strap. Love it, but bought the bracelet and like that better. And a Tudor Bronze/Blue Bucherer that’s stunning.

3 Rolex GMT- 16710 original black and now added and Pepsi and Coke bezels
116713-116710. These are my perfect travel watches.

2 Submariners 116610LVc and 116619. Both have been on dive trips

I’ve sold off 3 Date-Just and a D serial Plat 16622 which I never should have let go, it’s the most comfortable, close second to the 16710 which was my first. I may get that Yacht-Master back though. It was a looker but harder to see. I love them all and very happy with what I have with no plans to add, except the 16622 again possibly.

All these were before the shortage. As you can see the prices vary from low US$ 3000- mid US$ 20,000. Prices weren’t a factor. Tudor Quality is very good and don’t regret anything from Tudor, very comfortable. I had the Black Pelagos too, hated it. I guess I didn’t like every Tudor after all

True, but I wouldnt even mention this anymore IMO. Yes it holds some water from a 'quality standpoint' but the comparison leaves a bad tastes in people after hearing it because it can be taken negatively as well as positively.

IMO 'made by Rolex' applied back when they were virtually similar watches and when Tudor watches even had Rolex marked crowns and cases on them, but not now.

Tudor is Tudor and Rolex is Rolex, more of a big brother/little brother scenario and both have their equally good and proper place in the market.

My 2 cents (discounts available): Rolex is a conservative brand. But it has a bit of an alter ego that gets expressed via Tudor. Some of us like the variety available via Tudor, at a lower price point, with little compromise required.

We should have separate Tudor sub forum, this is like grouping Seiko/Citizen together, big difference between them

Anytime I see someone stating on here how Tudor quality is not the same as Rolex they never provide any examples (despite officially joining recently I have been on and off of here for 10 years or so).

With Tudor in-house movements with power reserves besting many Rolex models I just don't get the quality argument as they are not just ETA based watches anymore. Rolex may use some more expensive materials for certain parts but the quality and consistency of finishing appear to be the same. The watches are made by the same company after all...

I own both a Tudor and Rolex, comparing them side by side I cannot find a fault with either.

Some people really get caught up in the brand snobbery aspect.

More like Grand Seiko/Seiko....but even then, not a fair comparison as the price points are wildly different. Tudor is miles ahead of Seiko (not grand seiko).

I used to have several Rolex. Sold them all.

Have 7 or 8 Tudor pieces and a few other brands.

Rolex just got too “bling” and chunky for me. I don’t like ceramic bezels and the huge lugs/cases If they ever go back to a 5 digit case/bezel setup I will be the first one to come back. Doubtful that will happen. But with Tudor the slimmer cases and aluminum bezels are on point. The matte dials are more appealing to me. As is the eta movements (pre in house) that can be worked on by any watch maker for cheap at about any point in the future.

There are still Rolex that I like. The OP, the DJ, the explorer, explorer 2 and YM to name a few.

I feel like this question comes up often, and I am sure it's asked with genuine interest. However, the question might as well be, "Why do some eat steak, when other's prefer lamb?" Or "Why do some buy a sports car, when others prefer a sedan, or SUV?"

The answer, while perhaps unsatisfying, is that: Different people value different things in different ways.

Every consumer brand's goal is to try to convince people that there are *reasons* - emotional and/or practical - to buy into that brand.

People who prefer a given brand tend to think that enjoying the products of that brand is a good thing, which means good things about them, and their choice. "I have researched to my satisfaction, and I choose brand X.
It's the smartest/best choice, because my research/feeling/observations told me so, and others will see that and feel similarly."

People who DON'T like a brand tend to feel exactly the opposite - "Oh, You like brand X? You must be a jerk/snob/idiot/fool/poseur."

So, for many, "being a Rolex owner" is a thing to be proud of. For others, it's a stereotype to be avoided. For some, it's both - depending on the situation, location, activity, etc.

Bottom line: People buy things based on personal taste, and value assessment.

Most of us are on this forum because we like a couple of the same brands - and we enjoy discussing their merits and sharing in each other's enthusiasm. But don't forget that there are other brands, who other people feel EXACTLY the same about. (See Audi vs BMW. Coke vs Pepsi. Ford vs Chevy. Honda vs Yamaha. Starbucks vs Peets. Everything mass produced vs everything "artisan." (Note, avoiding religious and political discussion per forum rules. )

I like Rolex, AND Tudor. And I know some people won't understand. That's okay. I'm just glad to have multiple groups of folks with whom I can share my passion and enthusiasm, and also with from whom I can get inspired and excited.

yes, the vintage does. Go for the vintage Tudor...it appreciate values as a matter of fact. I've been some going for 40K. It's all about supply and demand....the vintage uses some Rolex parts....
