Coming back to the fold -- 372 or 504?

After a long hiatus, I'm trying to get back into watch collecting. The only watch left in my stable is an IWC Portuguese 5001 in steel with a black dial. I used to have a 111, but sold it to fund other things. Now I'm itching to add a Panerai back to my collection.

My first thought is perhaps the most obvious choice: the 372. That said, I'm feeling the itch to be a bit more adventurous. The 504 caught my eye. Generally, I prefer the base models or those with sub-seconds. I'm also biased toward in-house movements because I'm that kind of snob. Let's further assume this will be the only Panerai in my collection. What is the "right" choice?

The 372 is close to winning out, but I wonder if it's too pedestrian to represent a manufacturer/brand known for unique special editions.

Thanks!

welcome back!

both are great choices if you want a 47. i would hesitate to pick up the 504 due to OP once again stopping the sale of composites, but it is a nice looking one, for sure.

if my wrist could support it, i would go with 372 between these 2. if you could get your hands on one, the new 587 could be a good choice.

Hard to stay away, huh?

I was at an AD just last week, looking at a 504, 372, 422, 423 and a 512.

In the end, despite my misgivings about the 372's size (this after flipping a 312 due to its height and never seeming to be able to make it comfortable) I walked out with the 372. Absolutely iconic. The one that came closest to winning out was the 422. 423 was too busy.

Agree with Cru. If you're not hung up on the crown guard and seconds counter, 587 is also good. Nice pointed hands, too.
If you do like the crown guard and seconds register, 422 is worth looking at. Has power reserve on the back, and the seconds auto reset when setting minutes.

If you are happy with a Base then the 372 is pretty much the default choice

My personal favourite is the 422

Welcome back on board

"Right" choice and assuming this would be your only Panerai in your collection, 372 or a 422 seems to be it. Both are in house movements.

Here's a pic of a 422 and a 111 together to help u out a little
