Weakness in the Oyster case??

Hello everyone,
I purchased my first preowned DateJust 16014 in in excellent condition with boxes, tags etc. and service receipt from Rolex service center from 2001. Today, I purchased the rolex opener & removed the back and was pleased to see the clean movement. When I removed back rubber seal , I noticed that it in the case groove just under where the seal sits on, it had some black marks which appeared to be smudging from the seal, but were in fact pittings of perhaps signs of corrosion. On putting the seal back you cannot see any other marks as it appears mint. Is this a serious and common problem and if so, will an Auyhorised Rolex service center for next service do anything about it or do they just replace the case in this event???? It is the first watch amongst many other brands that I have had with this dissapointment. Surprisingly, my older battered Explorer does not have this. Have I have bought myself a flop?? . Sorry for no images, as I do not have a digital camera. Many thanks for your feedback.

Hi and Welcome timelord, don't quote me on this but, I do believe RSC will replace the case if needed and you authorize at the next service. This is my take on the issue although I myself have never had to have this issue looked at. Hope this helps :o)

Call them up to find out their official position.

I know they normally just buff the scratches out unless there are significant damage to the case. Not sure if your case warrants a case change.

But I'd take it in for a pressure test since you opened it on your own and I am not sure if you re-seal it properly.

Well first if its just in the Case groove, these pitting must be very small.Perhaps some silicon grease stains in the slight deviations in the case groove. But now opened should be pressure tested if you go anywhere near water. But I am sure that your watch don't have any major problem.

Welcome to TRF. Why do you have any doubts about the originality of the watch? If so, just have any AD check it out.

Good luck - JJ

If Rolex thought it would be a problem, they would have definitely let the owner know. So, obviously it may have been just normal pitting in a unfinished area of the case. I know when I had my 1965, SS DJ, serviced in 2003, they did replace the case.

I really doubt you have a problem with an 01 model. Rolex, at service will make it good as new, but as padi said now that you've cracked the case it should be pressure checked.
