I am going to buy a 2006 previously owned Rolex LV in like new condition. The model number / serial number are 16610TLV D59xxxx. I will get the whole serial number when I actually look at the watch. What should I specifically focus upon to make sure I am getting the real deal? Andrew

Is it local? Can you just take it to an AD with the seller to verify the authenticity?

Andrew,

The only real test is to have a watchmaker take off the back cover and look for a Rolex movement. Nobody has successfully faked one of those yet for the LV.

Any decent watchmaker can do this and if I had any questions at all, I would insist on it.

I'll bet that some LV owners will love to post pictures of theirs so you can print out some gidelines.

A "D" serial number is in the right date range. Good luck !!

Couple of things,

1. No where on the watch itself is the designation 16610LV. Between the lugs the reference number will read 16610T--just like any non-lug hole Sub. Rolex uses the same case for both references.

I'm a bit reluctant to buy a pre-owned LV for that reason WITHOUT the papers that will reflect the ser. no. on the watch.
On the papers the reference number will state 16610Vxxxxx

16610LV appears on the hang tag ONLY--at least those sold in the U.S.

2. Many early fake LVs got the tick spacing wrong at 6 o'clock were "SWISS MADE" is stated.

SWISS MADE should be just inside the 28 to 32 minute markers or just overlapping.

IF IT'S GOT LUG HOLES RUN!

There are pics of LVs with lug holes, but these were Rolex generated photos put out before the introduction of the LV to throw off fakers.

A couple of pics of mine (not the best quality). The watch you have there looks OK but I'm not sure about the serial number on the paperwork. Mine does not have LV in the serial number and I'm not sure what the first 3 numbers you have there are. They don't appear on my paperwork. I'm not an expert though and there could be a good reason for this. Good luck!

My paperwork also doesn't have LV in the serial number... The only place you'll get the LV is on the plastic tag that came with the watch. It's strange that your paperwork would have LV in the number...

this is pure speculation, but here goes

The watch looks genuine.

The seriel number is between the lugs and to see it the bracelet must come off...insist on this. Any paper with the watch is worthless for this in my opinion.

Good questions have been raised about the paperwork. However, with the current frenzy for "papered" watches it is entirely possible that the seller purchased those things because they are in demand. The paperwork is of no value to you as a second owner in the US, and only outside the US if it is still within the warranty period.

If the paper, box, etc were purchased separately,it should not be a deal breaker if the watch is genuine. The seller is only guilty of bad judgement and not fraud - unless he is attempting to prove a fake is real by providing all the "expected" goodies.

There is no 410 country code in Brozek's Rolex Report. 400 is Hong Kong and 413 is Korea

Apparently the watch is from Japan which according to the seller is why the certificate is different.

The BEST thing would to demand that the watch be taken to an AD for authentification. Only then you can be absolutelety positive that it is the real McCoy.

Having said that, from the pictures it does look real to me, but still:

Have an AD check it for you!

Well, I bit the bullet and got the LV. Took it to my watch smith and had the back case removed - it is a genuine Rolex. I will miss the GMT II but am happy about the LV. It is lighter and more comfortable on my wrist than the GMT II (2 tone). Thanks for everyone's help.
