Help buying a 16610LN
Hi Guys (and Gals),
I have finally got to the point where I'm going to buy my first Rolex, and it is of course the one that everyone copied, but its the only one I want, a Submariner 16610LN. Someone provided me with a great history of the submariner, which I read and read until I decided a 2003-2006 model was the one for me. So basically Superluminova, no holes in the lugs, and before they started putting that horrible engraving on the rehaut. Anyway, with box and papers they seem to go for about £7,500, but without, they go for about £6,500. I'm not bothered about the box and papers, because I will just wear it (or wrap it and put it somewhere safe, if I'm in the garage where it could get it scratched up). Anyway, I found one on Chrono24, 2003, no box or papers, but looking almost mint, from Watches & Jewelry of Bond St., so decided to enquire about it. I spoke with the guy there and I wasn't put at ease. He had no history on it, said it had been serviced by one of their 3 in-house watchmakers, and would do me a deal on it. I asked if he had a report off the timegrapher for it and he said no, which worried the hell out of me, as I currently wear a watch with an ETA clone movement in it and I KNOW how that watch runs in every position. This is a Rolex, surely he should know this. Anyway, as this is my first Rolex and I'd rather spend another £1000 and know that I have a good one. Can anyone recommend a dealer to work with, what to look for and what to avoid, and should I go for just a watch or one with papers and box?? Or anything else I've forgotten, I know servicing is going to be £500+ every 5 years. Thanks Padd |

It's better to spend a little bit more to have the peace of mind that you're getting a watch in good condition, especially considering it's your first Rolex.

Have a look on ebay and chrono24 for some prices. £8,500 will go a long way.
