Day Date vs Daytona wrist presence…

I know everyone always mentions that the Daytona wears smaller than the 40mm spec, wearing closer to 38-39mm. Is it just me or does the DD40 seem to wear even smaller than the Daytona? Maybe it’s the illusion of the fluted bezel vs a flat bezel? Anyone else feel the DD40 wears smaller than the 40mm spec?

No way

The Daytona wears heaps smaller than a DD40 imho. Add to that the president bracelet it feels and looks like a proper 40mm. The Daytona feels quite significantly smaller.

I still remember the very first time I tried on a Ceramic Daytona I was like WTF is this....lol

Felt very dainty and much smaller than expected.

The Daytona SS wears small period.

My DD40’s way more presence. My Daytona RG wears larger a bit than the DD40 (thicker?)
One of buddies tried on the SS Daytona and looked small on him. His fathers red Sub, he wears often looks way bigger than my white SS Daytona.

Daytona wears and actually measures somewhere between 38.6mm and 39mm

But size aside, the bling of the president and fluted bezel is going to eclipse any size issues.

The DD40 is pretty close to the same size as the Daytona if memory serves. Just under 39 I want to say. But the DD being more of a dress watch looks proper at that size. The Daytona to my eyes just looks too small. If it were 40-41 it would be perfect IMO.

First time I've ever heard someone say that. The Daytona has always come off as small due to all the business on the dial in that case size.

I tried on a DD40 fluted bezel this past weekend and had the exact same thoughts that it appears slightly smaller than the Daytona.

It depends on what you mean by “wears smaller.” From my personal perspective, my 116528 Daytona (YG) wears larger than my DD 40 (YG) in terms of visual size and perceived weight. I see the same visual thing with my SS Daytona, but, of course, it is much lighter.

It’s only a valid comparison with similar metal/dial combos.

With both watches in yellow gold, the Day-Date 40 is much more prominent or distinctive. The Day-Date has more "flashy bits" with the fluted bezel. I like wearing them both, but my 116508 is my favorite overall watch in my collection.

I saw a Day Date in the case at my AD the other day....It stood out from 10 feet away. I love the Daytona, but the DD seems to have it beat on presence.

Ya sorry I meant pure visual size of the watch on the wrist. I’m not saying the appearance of the bracelets or heft, just the visual size or diameters of the watch on the wrist.

I tried on a PM Daytona recently at my AD. It was an exhibition piece. At first I had the same sentiments that it was small. It definitely is thinner and more tapered/streamlined than other watches. Putting it on my wrist, looking in the mirror with it, and taking pictures of my wrist with it on, it actually looked to be perfectly sized. I don’t know what it is about the watch but while it looks small, it actually isn’t. I have a 6.5” wrist and it was a perfect fit. For comparison I wear an Omega SMP which is 41mm and it’s just on the cusp of being too big. IMO if you’re used to wearing bigger watches, or at least those with more wrist presence, then the Daytona will look strangely small.

I have never once thought that a Daytona looked small on anyone.

Heck, even Michael Strahan and Michael Jordan wear them...they are big guys.

The Daytona is definitely more of an athletic look. The DD is clunkier and over-dressed. So I much prefer the former.

Just wanted to add that it’s not the actual size but rather the design. The SD is 43mm but wears much smaller.

I was thinking about this last night, but in terms of if a president bracelet from a DD40 could be fitted to a PM Daytona. I think that would be a fantastic setup

A guy can dream!

I think the watches are very similar in size

It’s why I don’t have a Daytona. They’re tiny for what they are. Let me see on in 42 and we’ll talk

What if Daytona began as a 36 like the DD? Then everyone would say it wears larger than the case size maybe lol…I sure have liked my Daytona’s for the past 25 years. Awesome watches…

Here's a couple of pics for reference. As always, pics don't tell the whole story, especially when you're talking about wrist presence.

But...my take is that there's no significant difference, either way...outside of a watch forum, anyway, where mere millimeters seem to take on an importance far beyond their size.

Not a real significant difference IMO. The PM Daytona case will make a difference, at least it does for me, not to mention the pushers. I think it’s completely in the eye of the beholder weather or not there’s a perceptible size difference. They’re very different looking pieces.

Great pics.

The ceramic bezel on the Daytona definitely makes it wear larger. I always liked the Daytona but never got one as it was too small for my 8.25" wrist... until the ceramic bezel models came out. I still consider it a little small but acceptable. I'm on the list for a WG meteorite dial on OF. Wish they would make the ceramic bezel available on the bracelet pm models....
