Leave the plastic on?
Hi folks. New member here with a question. But first a bit of background.
I've been wearing a TT Ebel wave (quartz) for the past 26 years and over the past few years, whenever it needed a battery and service, I wore my dad's ND submariner that he bought new in 1971 (all original, curved plastic crystal, riveted band, only serviced by Rolex but not recently, missing pearl). Anyway, dad decided he wanted to wear it again (he promised not to sell it) and I decided I really liked having a fine automatic mechanical watch and I caught the bug, though the sub seemed a bit large for the everyday. After looking around and doing some homework for a couple of months I decided to avoid the risks of eBay and buy from a reputable brick and mortar (understanding that there are always risks). I found what I was looking for nearby and bought a Z series Air King, 14010m, white Roman dial, engine turned bezel, "never worn". My dealer provided me a two year dealer warranty. (The watch was originally purchased 8/07, supposedly as a corporate gift but then sold back to a dealer soon thereafter without being worn). It looked brand, spanking new and had both boxes, all correct papers, green hang tag, and had all of the protective plastic film on the watch case sides, case back, band, and clasp. The dealer removed most of the protective plastic film but left the protective plastic on the case back and suggested that I leave it there until it starts to peel and/or gets annoying, stating that it would help protect the Rolex hologram sticker underneath. So here's my question: Is this the common practice in this community, to leave the protective plastic on the back or is that nonsense? It's not bothering me at all but I can't see how it would really make a difference in the long run. I'll post a picture later if anyone is interested. Thanks! |

I like to leave the plastic on the clasp for a while after buying so it doesn't pick up scratches straight away. However all the others need to come off to so the beauty of the piece.

You should ABSOLUTELY leave all protective material, otherwise the warranty will be void.

Thanks for the congrats.
As for the hologram, I've seen so many watches advertised boasting that the hologram is intact, as if to indicate that's a plus. But I take it from the last couple of responses that the hologram is also not meant to stay put? |

The hologram will get yucky and disgusting from sweat, thus harder to remove in the future. Take it off now.

Hologram used to indicate authenticity but not on newer models as counterfeiters were putting them on too - remove the lot!

Remove it...and then wipe it down with "adhesive remover" stuff to take off all the gunk glue.

You mean you plan on wearing it????? NOOOOO.... I thought general practice was to wrap it up in a fine microfiber cloth, then bubblewrap. inside a box with peanuts and then lock in in the safe and only look at it once a month.... J/K Take the damn plastic off.
