Which VC Historiques Cornes de vache 1955?

As I continue to evaluate the watches I own and what I’d like to own and enjoy next, I keep coming back to the Cornes de vache. There are many watches on my list, but the CDV is one of the very few (possibly the only) that seriously makes me feel something. It’s a watch I put in a category that I describe as having serious classical character and charm. The lugs, movement finishing, and dial features, to me all add up to a seriously interesting watch that I would never become bored of looking down at. This combined with some pics I’ve recently seen posted by other members (I’m looking at you HL65!) have really narrowed down my next watch to very likely be a CDV. I’m not in a position to buy just yet, and may not be in that position for another year or two (or three), so from now until then I would like to learn as much as possible.

What say the forum? The steel can be had at the lowest price. The pink gold is, to me, possibly the most beautiful. The platinum may be the most special just given the case material. Bonus points for the “stealth wealth” factor. I do not yet own any full precious metal watches, so that factors into my equation a bit as well.

Here are pics of all three:

Steel

Pink gold

Platinum

Of those the pink gold is the most beautiful to my eyes. As a first PM watch that would be my choice…

Also, anyone that has actual pics from owning any of these, please post them here because they will be way better than the stock ones I posted up!

By saying you don’t currently have a precious metal watch, I think you have subconsciously knocked out the steel version!

I would go platinum, in for penny, in for a pound. Good luck and remember the chase is the best part.

Oh and I would put the brown strap from the steel version on it.

Platinum was my choice. I think it is pure perfection in the metal. I like the others but platinum if one can get is tops.

SS definitely the most plentiful of the CDV’s followed by the RG. The Platinum clearly is retired and finding one not the easiest. I see them from time to time listed and they usually go quite fast.

Really hard to argue with that. Wow it’s just a stunning watch. I’m so glad you have it and are enjoying it!

Thank you for your input. I think you’re right because if I’m honest with myself, I have basically had what you said as a thought. I know deep down that yes, the stainless steel is cheaper, but that if I get it I won’t be satisfied. I think I also know that, to me, the pink gold is the most beautiful but that the platinum may be the most special, if that makes any sense.

Beautiful watch and funny you should post it, because I have also loved that one for a long time and really considered it as well. It’s so cool that VC did that one in two versions, both in stainless steel. I have tried it on and it’s another one that captured my heart because of that classy character and charm. Thanks for sharing, and keep enjoying that stunning VC.

I do like that strap, however I also really like the one that comes on the platinum version. If I do end up with a CDV someday I may have to get multiple straps for it.

Really great choices here, and listen to your heart!

I think pink gold, but pt is also one I've tried on and love.

That stainless version is also stunning. Thanks for sharing. I was reading about that version earlier today.

Thank you for your input. I imagine the weight of those, especially the platinum, feels great on the wrist.

It’s funny, as I’ve read some more articles and forum topics about this watch from other forums and from years ago I have seen the words I used - “charm” and “character” - to describe this watch by multiple people.

Stunning! I actually just remembered I’ve got a couple pics from a couple of years ago when I was in Switzerland and tried on this watch. I remember even then I was shocked at how it made me feel.

Did you try it recently in Singapore? may I ask what boutique? I'd love to try it to see if rose gold fits my skin tone.

I tried it in Feb 2021 at ION Boutique. I'm not sure if it is still there. I suggest calling them before you fly in?

I just tried it out for a while at the local VC boutique here. Great choice! Personally, I would opt for gold and pair it with a bright strap.

I prefer the SS version and could not see paying a premium for the Platinum. Pre-owned also would be my way.

I don't really like coloured golds so for me it's either steel or platinum. I went with steel but I don't think you can go wrong either way. Good luck and post some pics when you get it!

Thank you for your input. It’s definitely a substantial difference in price between the various metals available.

Interesting idea, but I could actually see this looking pretty cool. What do you have in mind? Now that I think about it, the pink gold would likely look nice with a red leather. I also think it looks great on various shades of brown, obviously, but some brighter colors might look great.

I have the steel and always lusted after the Pt, if only because it’s Pt. But did anyone compare the dials side by side? The steel seems opaline and the pt seems white. Not sure which is more beautiful.

I’d like to see that as well. I am also interested in the differences between the steel and platinum dials. I know the steel has some touches of red on it with some of the numbers as opposed to the platinum’s touches of blue.

Wow! Never saw that one (and likely never will), and I'd have to agree. The dark dial looks great & love the pulsometer! Almost pulled the trigger on a platinum one a couple of years ago- & still may one day. For my money it's one of the most beautiful dress chronos available at any price.

Their pink gold is amazing, especially with a chocolate leather strap. Amazingly warm. If you’re not going after the original, that the version I’d recommend.

Yeah that’s what I like about that version as well. You summed it up very simply and very well: warm.
