What causes this kind of pitting on case?

And is it ever able to be remedied? Seller is trying to sell 16610LV M serial with box and papers with price drops from 13500 all the way to 12000 USD over past few months. I am not buying, but I've never seen anything like this.

That is not pitting, those are dings and scratches from rough treatment.

Agree. Pitting on stainless is typically caused by manganese or chlorides. It's also got a distinct look, that doesn't match that picture.

Dings aren't uncommon on tool watches.

Across my 20 years of various steel watches, I've always found my case ding or gouges are mostly along the chamfer/line angles of the lugs. The sides of the case seem to get mere light scratches in comparison.

I always wrecked non sapphire crystals though.

As mentioned they are bangs and scratches and definitely not pitting. And surely the wearer would have known they were making a real mess of the sides and to keep doing it is a little bonkers

Some people think that because it's called a tool watch, you can wear it while using tools (left), rather than for its intended purpose as a precision instrument/tool (right).

Exactly that expect it was worn daily and not pampered like most of todays Rolex watches.

I had a watch that had almost those exact same markings. It was from dropping it on pavement/gravel in my driveway.

What causes this kind of pitting on case?

I have tons of dings on all sides of my EXP from heavy use but none like the ones shown. I wear the heck out of mine but I haven’t used it as a hammer.

That can be remedied by laser weld and polish but it won’t be cheap. I’m sure you can find a much better example.

Ouch - that’s from abusive wear with extreme conditions like wearing a chain next to while rock climbing.

It’s definitely unusual to see such a steep price drop on a 16610LV M serial, especially with box and papers. It could be a sign that the seller is struggling to find a buyer due to market conditions, or maybe there’s something specific about that piece that’s raising concerns, like condition or service history. While market fluctuations can sometimes remedy slow sales, consistent price drops like this might signal the need for the seller to be more transparent or address potential issues with the watch. If the piece is solid, it could just be a matter of finding the right buyer, but the ongoing price reductions are definitely interesting.

Condition of a watch is like location of a property to me. I'd also pass on an abused watch.

It is plausible that upon his arrival at the workplace, he realized he had inadvertently left his hammer behind. Consequently, his tool watch became the most suitable alternative.

Those marks are most likely from collision events like banging against something hard very frequently. Something about that previous users activities must have been rough. Working in an engine bay of a car or carelessly bumping into a metal door jam literally everyday in the same spot.

Lots of hairline scratches would be more commonly considered "normal wear" in my opinion. These are probably from an activity where most watch wears would take off the nice watch and throw a Gshock on.
