Laurent Ferrier Galet Square - This or that
I am completely in lust with the Laurent Ferrier Galet Square in stainless and it has been on my wish list for a while. I was initially attracted to the blue dialed stainless version but naturally the price scared me off but now have the opportunity to purchase a LNIB gold/champagne dial version.
Which do you prefer? Why? What premium would you be willing to pay for a new watch over the LNIB version? Would the fact that I have a blue dialed Patek 5711 make you change your mind if you prefer the blue dialed LF? Here's a link to a write up of the watch that shows the two dials: (I assume I can't use their pics on TRF so that is why I am posting the link.) https://monochrome-watches.com/laure...s-steel-price/ |

Of those two I like the blue one but I've seen even better versions of that Galet Square. Check the Cellini NYC website.

Blue.
Wanted to say champagne (due to having the blue 5711), but on seeing the photos, it was a no-brainer. The champagne dial really needs a darker metal case, like Tantalum or brushed Titanium – as it is, it all looks a bit wishy-washy. |

I prefer the blue dial. If you keep a "smaller" collection (of great watches) then two blue dials might be a bit heavy. If you have a larger collection then I wouldn't hesitate to add another blue dial. The champagne dial would be a no-go for me - more difficult to read due to lower contrast and quarterly indices.
The Galet classic micro rotor is my favorite; I still think the Square reminds me too much of a Pam Radiomir. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Of those two I like the blue better. If you expand the option set, my favorite gallet square is the steel boreal with sector dial

Entirely different watch to the 5711 so I wouldn't let the color affect your decision.

Here are photos of my 2 favorite versions in steel.
The Autumn with the rose gold dial. And the Motor sport with blue dial made for Fourtane of California. |

I'd prefer the rose gold dial - so exotic!

Definitely not the champagne dial.
Either the blue or maybe the rose gold with the chocolate dial. But obviously there'll be a big premium for the metal. So go with the blue. |

I am wondering if you're looking at the one Tourneau has for sale?
I have seen it in person and it's absolutely exceptional. The movement is amazing, the finishing is top-notch, there's almost nothing not to like about it... apart from the dial. I don't know if it was the in-store lighting or my not-so-great eyesight, but I found the dial hard to read. The thin light color hands on the light background isn't very legible. It's not that I couldn't read it (I could), but definitely not as easy as most other watches. My preference would be for the blue or, my favorite, the Boreal. Same great movement and case, but more legible. If you were looking at the one Tourneau has for sale, they've had it for at least six months. I think I saw it back in June or July, so they may be willing to move on the price. Having a blue dial 5711 in the collection wouldn't change a thing for me. No reason to diversify just for the sake of it, especially if you like a characteristic. |

Thanks for the comments! I have decided to "hold" on the champagne dial and see if I can negotiate a good price on a new blue dialed version from an AD.
I have looked at the other options mentioned above but I like the classic timeless look of the blue dial over the other Galet Square options. I'm surprised that people like those as the most common gripe about this LF model is that it looks like a Panerai and IMHO those other dials make it look more sporty thus making me understand the Panerai reference. What do you guys think would be a good discount on a new blue dialed version? |

Another option would be the Galet Micro-Rotor. It uses the same movement as the Galet Square, but is housed in a round precious metal case.
Manfredi currently has a blue dial white gold used piece for sale at a price that's in the same range as the Galet Square. It's a very nice watch, though definitely smaller and less sporty than the Square. |

Update on my post. Have decided to pass on the champagne dial Galet Square. Have been in contact with an AD on working a deal for a new blue dial Galet Square but we are still a little apart on price. I am in no hurry and I know the AD has had the watch in stock for a while since that was the original AD I saw it at so I will hold tight and see if they are willing to budge on the price moving forward.

Curious as to what type of discount they are offering? I love the Galet Square, but having a hard time wrapping my head around a price that is 2-2.5 times that of a Patek Philippe or Lange for a time only watch. |

I wouldn't even consider other than blue, it's way sexier in blue than it is in another color, doesn't matter if you have other blue dials, blue is the one to get here

Last year my AD had a pre owned limited edition of 5 pieces in each coloured dial of the Galet.
Especially made for the only UK AD William & Son. In this case it was with the blue dial and they sold it for £15,000

No matter what colour the dial is I can't ignore that every time I see this watch my brain actually sees a Panerai. I've had a few Rads and I love them and so I do like this case shape so that comment was not a negative one.
In terms of the two colours presented I actually prefer the gold toned dial. It's difficult to really know how that dial looks without seeing it in person but there's enough in those pictures to make me think that on the right strap it would be far more interesting than the blue dial. |

I've tried on the blue and champagne, I much prefered the blue with more functionsl dial layout. The other thing to consider is that LF is a small independent brand, they may be willing to swap the dial out when it goes in for a service. I made similar enquiries with De Bethune and they were more than happy to do so and the cost eas relatively small.
