Thinking of consolidating, is this a fair trade in offer for my current watches?

Hello all,

I have been wanting a rose gold DD40 for as long as I can remember. They were always out of my budget, so I accumulated a "I kind of like this watch too and can afford it" collection consisting of a 2019 Bluesy, a 2020 Rootbeer, and a 2021 DJ41/Blue Stick/Jubilee/Fluted bezel.

All of these were bought at the same AD brand new. This AD however, due to another AD closing down, apparently is so busy that I haven't heard from them at all lately since apparently they now have a lot of the customers that used to go to the now closed AD coming to them.

The AD closest to me makes the trade in of my current watches a rather complicated process. Take pics, submit at website, wait for soft offer, wait for boxes to be shipped to you, ship watches in those boxes, wait for hard offer and either accept and get a check or get your watches back. Ain't noone got time for all that.

The next closest AD, with whom I have a small purchase history seems to be a lot easier to deal with. You literally bring your watches there and pay the difference. Long story short, they offered me 37500 for all 3. I think 15k for the Rootbeer, 9k for the DJ41, and 13500 for the Bluesy. That's basically what I paid for all of them brand new. I am smart enough not to whip out Chrono24 prices....do those seem fairly realistic?

I was offered a DD36 Rose with chocolate dial and roman numerals, and a YG DD40 black stick dial. I'd rather have any RG DD40 (Olive, Ombre, Chocolate), and should one of these pop up (unlikely, I know, except maybe the Chocolate) I might just pull the trigger.

I am still torn between what I have wanted for the longest time and having a nice variety to wear. I could be impatient and impulsive and trade my current ones in for that RG DD36 Chocolate since it's almost what I want, but in the end, that's the problem, it's almost what I want, not what I want, and I just can't see trading my "fairly desirable" watches for a 36mm, I know I'd regret that.

I'm a firm believer that less is more. I've personally trimmed down my collection to only 2 essential watches and am quite happy.

With that being said, I would recommend consolidating. Go for the DD, but don't settle. Wait for the one you truly want.

Do you mean, sell the watches to them, pocket the money and wait for the watch that I want to show up? I didn't ask if they'd actually do that. I am not sure if I really do want to do that because I don't want to be without a nice watch for too long and I prefer not to wear the one remaining Rolex in my collection since it's over 60 years old and I usually only wear it on family occasions.

On the other hand, they told me that their offer is good for 2 weeks. Should the market keep decreasing, I might have less value in my watches by the time I want shows up, or the market might turn up and they'd be worth more. Tough decision.

I have not. Another AD actually had a 2024 RG DD40 Olive, but they wanted 52k for it. I tried to work out a deal but "the owner won't be back until next week, we will contact you then" was the answer and I never heard back.

I guess I will play the waiting game, at least PM watches seem to be easier to come by at the AD now.

The offer for your watches is pretty good. Most definitely don’t do this for the 36, if it’s the 40 you really want. For me, I would not do this at all. You have a nice collection.

Wait for the olive day date. with your trade in's you're very close. Get it through a grey dealer and skip the wait

Values are somewhat low on your watches but such is the market. I would go search our Trusted Sellers for the watch you want and discuss your values. Many of the Trusted Sellers can source watches so if they wanted they could find what you want. I prefer the DD40 over the 36 and definitely get what you want. In the long run this will prove better as you will not do another trade. Good luck and keep us posted.

I’d look to a TS and get the DD40. No way I’d make that trade for a 36. Also, personally, there’s no way I’d make that trade without having at least 1 SS piece to go along with the DD.

The offer for your watches is reasonable and with the current secondary market you may not get any better offers. How you proceed to get your dream watch is a question you can only answer. If it was me, I’d sell sell the Rootbeer and DJ, keep the sub and save up to get the DD.

Agree. The AD offer seems reasonable, but never settle for something other than the one you really want.

There’s no way to know if their offer is good or bad unless the exact “in hand” condition is known. Of average wear, I’d say those are today’s reasonable rates.

As for settling, it seems like that is what you have done all along. Your current watches aren’t doing it for you anymore and you want the true “scratch the itch” watch. What I don’t know is if after getting that watch you will be happy or looking for the BBD.

For me, I CAN see having a PM piece as my one and only watch, but not a RG fluted bezel DD. I could see RG GMT 126715 or WG 116719/126719 (even better 1-watch), or Daytona 12650X/1X.

The only reason I am thinking about doing this is because PM DD's seem to be finding their way to AD's and, especially for a RG DD40, getting a new one at the AD at retail is almost a bargain especially seeing that they are willing to do such an easy trade in procedure. I was almost surprised that they'd basically give me the money back that I paid for my watches seeing how the secondary market has adjusted downward quite a bit. Looking in the second hand market though, a RG DD especially with an Olive, Ombre, or Chocolate dial is nowhere near as affordable. As many have said, I have waited this long, so to me it's a no brainer that if I can get either of the 3 RG DD40s at retail to trade my current watches for them. All my watches came new from an AD, I like that experience, I just feel I'd be impatient and just not quite have that feeling of accomplishment of finding that difficult to get watch at retail if I take the shortcut and pay more for instant gratification. Maybe I am cheap, maybe I feel like a cheater if I pay more just to get something right now. I am also worried that with the Rolex CPO program, the easy trade in procedure that this one particular AD still has might go away before I find what I want, which is why I am a little antsy and am considering "not quite, but close enough" alternatives.

I found myself watching videos on YG DD40s with black dials now, trying to convince myself that I really like it since one currently is available at that same AD, but I have been doing a good job of talking myself back out of it again.

Just out of curiosity, what is everyones favorite YG DD40 dial? I kinda like black or white.

OP - I think for anyone buying a Rolex DD, it should be the exact configuration you desire.

Sell the watches back, collect the 37.5k, buy something inexpensive to have an all SS watch in the collection (Tudor, Omega, IWC), wait for the perfect DD.

Also, you've made the statement your collection is built on "nice watches that I could afford at the time" and...you're getting ready to do the exact same thing with the DD if you don't get the dial/size you really want. Man, whatever you do, don't make the same mistake twice.
