There is no such thing as a grail watch..

You only get temporary gratification once you buy your grail and then move on to the next shiny watch. Your watch taste and liking changes over time. At some point I waited long for a RO but before I could get my hands on it I lost interest. Life lesson after being a long term watch owner having owned many “grails” Subs, Daytona, YM, DJ and lately just the Pepsi and Starbucks. Thoughts?

Not in my case. When I got my Patek 3970 I thought it was my one and only grail. Now it's a Patek 5970

I agree.

I don’t think there’s a “be all end all” watch for me, at least I haven’t met it yet

As you say, tastes change and new watches are introduced. I think I’ll always keep a few (what I consider) classics

Something like a sub or a gmt shouldn't be a grail. Something like a SARU or RBOW, now that's grail territory.

If expensive and hype watch is a grail then that’s ok. But know that there is always one up expensive than the ones you mentioned so your grail could be low too. It’s all relative

Here's how I see things.

There is no grail, it's an illusion. Once you get it, there'll always be the next piece looming on the horizon, ready to strike. There's no exit watch.

Thus you could very well carry on adding all sorts of watches despite your grail. You wake up one day and you find it too heavy, you don't like the attention from people, you don't feel safe on the street with it, scratches annoy you, you miss your good old beaters and not so beaters etc etc.

We know what it's like in this hobby, grass is always greener with the next piece on the wrist.

Agree. There are no grails, no matter the price. You may think it's a grail, it's not. With time comes comfort, or boredom. There will always be the next new shiny object. That is just the nature of this hobby.

While there is no grail watch, there can be satisfaction, contentment with what you have. I think that's the grail, contentment and satisfaction with the collection you have with an occasional adjustment of that collection.

There is no pot of gold at the proverbial rainbow's end. You get to that rainbow, only to discover there's another rainbow, often just out of reach, that looks so much better.
I always like to think there's an end game watch, but for us super enthusiasts, there never is. There's many you like, often like for a long time, but it is very difficult to get one and be happy forever with it the way you imagine in your head it will be.

In my case, I think it’s a little different. My definition of a grail watch is a watch I’ll never have. There are many, unfortunately. They will always be grail watches to me.

Grail to me, is the watch(es) I know I will keep til I’m pushing daisies and my kids grab
em. It may take a few tries to figure that out but in my case, it’s a Sub (SD) and a GMT.

Similar here. For me the the BLRO on Jubilee would quality in a world where only one watch was allowed. Glad I don't live there.

My "grail watch" was a yellow gold Submariner 116618. I love that watch and it has a permanent spot in my collection. It meant a lot for me to be able to buy that watch 14 years ago.

I've since added plenty of watches to my collection, many of them way more exclusive or expensive as compared to that gold Submariner. None of those other watches have the importance that my Submariner does. I suppose that's the definition of a "grail" watch to me.

This is so true!

I wore a planet ocean for 10 years every day and the bug bit me once I sent it in for service and I didn’t have a watch. I’ve been on the hunt for my grail ever since. lol

Life is short buy the watch-

The term Grail watch can have a lot of different meanings. mostly when I hear someone asking what is your Grail watch I think to myself and then I think to myself again and then I think to myself again and I don't have an answer. i have quite a few Rolex watches and a few from other brands . So I can't really answer the question but I can say this my authorized dealer knows enough about me to keep me in mind for a variety of other watches that they think I don't have and that I might, want the next one will be my so-called grail until the next one after that. And each one has a favorite spot in my collection. I try to wear a different watch every day until I have to repeat however I tend toward mostly wearing Rolex and repeating.

Many are not in to watches to constantly buy.
If your in the watch game to only consume and buy the next one then there could never be a “grail watch” to end the search. It’s not the watch but the search and purchase you are addicted to and the watch is merely a chess piece.

Grail doesnt have to be expensive or unachievable. It just has to be your goldilocks. A Paul Newman Daytona is supposedly grail for many but not for me. It wouldn't do anything for me except thinking I got a damn expensive watch and I could sell it for a profit.

But I have been through that phase where expensive hype watches were my grail but as life went on came to realize that was not the case.

That's a good perspective and it is so true. Sometime I am so consumed with the process of finding the watch that I really forget to think if that watch if available would really make me happy ?

Great perspective. I think the same of my Sub LV which gets more wrist time over my Pepsi.
