Canada deposit

So a local Canadian Rolex AD told me they can get me a 116610ln in about 6 months but I have to leave a deposit for 35 per cent of the total cost first. Is this normal?

It may be the new normal yes. Do you have a purchase history with the AD? Where abouts are you located?

I assume no discounts and you will pay taxes. Why not go Grey and get the watch tomorrow. If you look at retail plus tax you, will be close on the Grey Market. Look at our Trusted Sellers here, get your watch and start wearing and enjoying it.

Buying from outside of Canada after customs duties it ends up being a lot more and when I see these watches come up in Canada they are also a lot more than new after tax

That sounds about right to me. IMO, you will probably be surprised to the upside and get the watch sooner than 6 months.

If that’s the watch you really want, I’d do it. Maybe ask if it doesn’t come within X months, you get your money back. But I’d do it regardless. But I bet it comes sooner.

I’ve done this a couple times. I think I know the AD you are referring to and both times the watch came in earlier than expected. I know a lot of guys here scoff at the idea of paying a deposit, but in my view it guarantees you get the watch versus being put on a “list” that may or may not actually exist.

If he puts that in writing, you can pay the deposit of 35%.
If he doesnt want to,why not ?

Very normal, I've seen anywhere from 15%-50%.

I would ask for some sort of back-up or confirmation that a specific model will be reserved for you.

In today's market, I would be more than happy to leave the deposit at the official AD, if that would secure the purchase of a desired piece.

This would be my thinking too. You need to know that your deposit is secure.

Go for it OP, buying grey in Canada is gonna get you skinned alive by the customs, sales taxes and current exchange rate with the US dollar. You should only do it for a good deal on a PM watch otherwise it's just not worth the trouble.

Interesting....my initial hunt in November 2019 for an E1 had all ADs telling me they wouldn't accept a deposit.

(in Southern Ontario - I was hunting from Toronto, as far West as London, and as far North as Collingwood)

some places ask for 100% payment, but with a guaranteed delivery date, so that isn't bad.

There's no rules per se but when there is a list of people waiting for any certain piece I'm sure the AD will call those who put money down before they call just a name written down. I recently called an AD out of state on another brand and was told pretty much the same thing, refundable deposit of course due to it being wanted with an ongoing list.

Totally normal for that model in Ontario. I’m actually surprised they’ve committed to getting it for you at all! If you want it, go for it. But remember the price went up - now $10.5 plus tax for the sub date.

Clarify whether the deposit can be returned should you change your mind / life circumstances

Presumably they say no refund - store credit only. But, agree, you should clarify the terms, OP.

By taking risk and underdeclaring the value, for example $100 - that would be my guess

Only if the deposit is 100% refundable - regardless.

Then no worries.

No idea why . Maybe because it came from an individual and not a business ? Two Steinharts from Germany and Singapore garnered $110 and $29 tax and duty on declared values of $580 and $100 respectively recently before I purchased the Rolex .They did not satisfy the Rolex itch though.

Was this Raffi?????????

Make sure you read the fine print on your deposit. Heard many a complaints from others who left big deposits and when they no longer wanted to wait because 6 months was stretched to a year, Raffi would only give them an in store credit and not the return of funds.
