Wife wants to engrave my watch.

After 25 years of marriage, my wife surprises me with my GMT MII. Quite a surprise for such a milestone event. After a year and a half, she now wants to put the engraving on it; she said she wanted to make sure I was going to keep it. This is the first Rolex I have ever had, and don't plan on buying another. Does engraving the watch take away some of the value? If at some point hard time come 'a knocking will the sale be as swift with the sentimental words on its back?

In my opinion yes. It will definitely take away some of the value.

But you could always order another back from Rolex as a spare have it engraved and installed on the watch. Keep the original back and put it on should you have to sell. That way it remains 100%.

Make sure you get the the name right!

I would engrave it. It was given by her to you so that's all that matters. It shows you want to have it remember not as a watch, but as a gift from the heart.

I would in a heart beat. I would not think twice about buying an engraved watch also. I think it adds something to the watch. Do it and enjoy it

The worth of the watch to you and especially your wife is that the watch is a sign of the value of your marriage. If you have any sense at all you will see that and take it to the engravers

I say YES, engrave it. Absolutely appropriate and while it may diminish the value if you sell it, it increases the value to you and your family.

Exactly, it will decrease the value for resale, but that doesn't mean it's worth any less to you. It'll have a good story as a family heirloom when you pass it on to whoever.

But if you did plan on selling it one day...

As a gift from your wife the value will not be diminished as it is token of her affection.

As your wife, shouldn't she be able to trust you?

Anyway, yes, engraving greatly detracts from an item's value, even more so if the engraving is very personal. This goes for anything, from iPods, to watches, to pens.

Forget About the value and go for sentiment. Let her get it engraved. It's only a watch.

Depends on what you term as value..

It should be more valuable to you engraved than not....

There may be others who think it would make it less valuable.. But here I disagree..

I think that it may reduce your share of market since there are some who would not buy an engraved watch........ But it's still exactly the same as any other watch of it's age, and therefore worth exactly the same..

In any event, in the future if you don't want it any more, or decide to sell it...send it in for a service and ask for the case-back to be replaced.. Then you will have a freshly serviced watch with a 1 year warranty...worth more than any other watch out there..

Here's a circa 1959 Omega Cal 500 Seamaster that I purchased with engraving. Engraving was by hand as the strokes are visible.
I wouldn't hesitate having your Rolex engraved by your better half.

Engraving makes it easier to identify/recover in the case of theft....

It's special and engraving is nice too.
Don't think about what "might" happen. Just wear the watch and enjoy it. Save your $$ other ways and never have to tap into the Rolex asset

Wife wants to engrave my watch.

Has she done any engraving before? You might wanna let her practice on some cans or dog-tags first

Its a gift from your wife, resale shouldn't even enter the equation

Engrave it.

Why worry about the value of a watch when you have a wife who is as wonderful and loving as yours!

Best option. I'd engrave and keep the spare just in case [pun intended].

How can the watch be circa 1959 when it states that the 29 years of service ended in 1968?

Before engraving make sure the back is screwed on all the way so that the engraving remains straight.
